Holding the tickets, Rebecca couldn’t contain herement. “It’s tonight. I…”

Darren had planned everything. “We can grab dinner nearby, then head over. There’s plenty of time.”

“Great! Let’s go!” Rebecca exclaimed, pulling out her phone. “Let me transfer the money for the tickets.”

Darren paused. “Okay.”

She tapped on her phone to make the transfer, and he just looked at her. Their shadows stretched across the ground in the setting sun.

Vance stood on the steps, watching the two figures disappear into the distance. He remained motionless and silent for a long

time.

A classmate behind him called out, “Hey, Vance, why are you still here?”

“What are you looking at?” Jethro followed his gaze to see Rebecca and Darren walking away.

“Nothing,” Vance said quietly, “I thought I saw a plane fly by.”

Before Jethro could react, he added, “I’m going to the hospital. ”

“Oh…” Jethro felt the atmosphere had turned strangely awkward, but he couldn’t quite put his finger on it

Vance left through the back gate, in the opposite direction from Rebecca. As he walked away, he couldn’t help glancing back the same moment, Darren also looked back.

The sunlight was blinding, and the distance too great. Neither could see the other’s expression
