Vance went inside and checked on trene first. She was already asleep, a gentle smile on her face even in her dreams.

He smiled softly, then went to his room and took a shower.

The gift Darren had given him sat on his desk. It was the only real gift he had received this birthday besides the group cake.

Of course, he didn’t care whether his classmates gave him presents. What bothered him was that he had waited until everyone left, but the so–called universe crystal ball never appeared

The weather had been good that day. In the courtyard, one could see a sky full of stars. The hotse had been filled with laughter and voices like never before, yet his heart still felt a hollow emptiness he didn’t know how to fill

Darren’s gift was packed in a small box. He opened it and froze.

It was a custom keychain—the kind one could order online. It was a simple item, but the design was frat ordinary.

After staring at it for a while, he put it back into the box and placed the box in his drawer. Then he sat there in a daze before finally going to bed.

The next day at school, Jethro was still puzzling over something. Unable to hold it in, he asked Vance, “Didn’t Rebecca give you a gift yesterday?”

The empty spot in Vance’s heart ached, but his expression grew even colder. “Didn’t she chip in for the cake?”

“No, I mean…” Jethro faltered. “Maybe I saw it wrong.”

Right then, a classmate exclaimed, “Guys, let’s go to the arts class heard there’s a cool crystal ball that can project a universe onto the ceiling.”

“Universe? Crystal ball?” Jethro muttered, dragging Vance along. “That’s it! Let’s go watch!”

The curtains in the arts experimental class were drawn, making the room dim. On Darren’s desk sat a crystal ball with a universe scene inside it. Earth and countless shining stars were floating in liquid.

“Darren, didn’t you say it could show the Big Dipper?” a classmate said. “Show us!”

Darren turned it on, transforming the ceiling into a deep blue expanse. A blue Earth floated within it, the Milky Way glittered, and the Big Dipper was clearly visible.

“Wow, this is so beautiful!” the students marveled. “How does it work?”

“Let Rebecca explain. She designed it,” Darren said.

He had simply finished the final assembly and brought it to school today to show the result.
