The moment the words left his mouth, Jethro realized his mistake.

“Vance…” He approached, no longer playful. “I’m sorry. I just checked. It’s not the same crystal ball.”

A sharp voice cut through. “Vance Bradford!”

Jethro turned around to see the math teacher arriving.

“Come here!” The teacher pointed at Vance.

Jethro groaned, knowing this was the consequence of last night’s game. He felt genuinely sorry for Vance.

Not only had his birthday gift disappeared, but now Vance was going to be scolded by the teacher. Jethro really regretted ever suggesting that game.

For a top student like Vance, being made to stand as punishment was horrible. It was different for someone like Jethro, who was

used to it.

“It’s fine.” Vance put down his pen calmly and followed the math teacher to the office.

He remained standing for the rest of the classes that day. It drew countless curious glances from students in other classes, all whispering and gossiping.

Guilt drove Jethro to go to the math teacher and plead for Vance, who had actually done the homework. He confessed everything, admitting it was his fault for suggesting the game.

Unfortunately, his honesty didn’t save Vance. It only led the teacher to punish him, too. He ended up standing right next to his

friend.

Jenny felt bad and wanted to stand with them. Jethro simply shooed her away. “Go back to your seat. Or people will say the two of us can’t even handle it and have to drag a girl into it.”

Jenny hesitated, then offered to treat them to a meal as compensation.

“It has to be something good,” Jethro agreed. “A feast on the weekend.”

“No problem!” Jenny promised, patting her chest.

The two boys stood through the classes until school let out. Jethro exaggeratedly limped around, but the moment his basketball teammates called, he perked up.

Then he remembered Vance and turned back. “How are you holding up? Can you still play? You’re not like me, you’ve never been punished before. You’re delicate.”
