Chapter 666
Vance quickened his steps and got on the same bus.
It was rush hour, so the bus was crowded. Rebecca got squeezed into the raiddle, while Vance ended up near the front.
Several rows of people separated them. Unless they looked deliberately, they couldn’t see each other. So, Rebecca had no idea he was on the bus.
Vance could only catch occasional glimpses of her profile when the bus turned. She had gotten quite tan this summer, but it made her facial features look more defined.
She was no longer like a timid rabbit. The setting sun cast a golden glow on her profile and made her shine.
Some passengers got off, and the crowd loosened a bit. Vance moved closer in her direction until only two or three people separated them.
More passengers got on, pushing him even nearer. She still didn’t notice him and continued staring out the window.
He began to zone out, too, interrupted by a commotion. Rebecca’s clear, crisp voice rang out. “What are you doing? Take it out right now!”
Vance’s attention snapped to her. He quickly pushed through the crowd and heard an arrogant man shouting, “What am I doing? Don’t talk nonsense!”
“I saw you stealing! You still want to deny it?” Her voice carried undiminished force.
“Accusing people randomly can get you beaten!” The man in baggy work pants rolled up his sleeves and charged toward her.
Vance squeezed through the last obstacles and stepped between them, shielding Rebecca behind him. He stared coldly at the man. “What do you want?”
Though young, he was half a head taller than the man.
The man faltered but kept up his tough act. “Kid, you’d better/stay out of this!”
“What did you steal? Hand it over!” Vance demanded, grabbing his wrist.
“He stole this lady’s phone!” Rebecca stepped forward and pointed at an elderly woman nearby.
The old lady checked her pocket. Sure enough, her phone was gone.
“Madam, give me the number,” Rebecca said, taking out her phone. “I’ll dial it, and we’ll know if he stalę,it.”
The old lady quickly recited her number. The man panicked and struggled, trying to break free from Vance’s grip.
When he failed, he shouted, “Hey, stop the bus! I’m getting off!”
Rebecca had already dialed. A phone started ringing somewhere on the man.
