Chapter 707
Vance’s words set–Jenny off again.
“As I said, it’s either her or me!” she snapped. “If you’re still calling her a friend, even a month of French dinners won’t make me forgive you!”
Rebecca couldn’t even remember if Jenny used to argue with Vance like this. Back then, she’d forced herself to keep her distance from him quietly, just like she was now, silently stirring her drink.
“Jenny!” Vance looked uncomfortable. “Why are you being so difficult? You and Catherine have no real conflict of interest. Why do you insist on treating her like an enemy?”
Rebecca snorted. That comment alone showed that he was still siding with Catherine.
Jenny, who had been dipping her bread in sauce, flung the dish at him. “No conflict? Are you kidding me? She argued with me and stole Rebecca’s speech topic! If Rebecca hadn’t prepared a backup, she would’ve been humiliated at the competition!”
“That was a trap, wasn’t it?” Vance countered.
“Say that again!” Jenny challenged.
Vance threw his hands up, turning to Rebecca. “Am I wrong?”
Jenny blew up. “Vance Bradford!”
“But anyway, stealing is wrong at the end of the day,” Vance cut her off. “Rebecca just left the bait out for anyone foolish enough to take it. Catherine was too desperate to win.”
Jenny rolled up her sleeves, like she was ready to jump on him. “You’re really something! What’s that supposed to mean? So, even though it’s Catherine’s fault, you’re still covering for her, eh?”
“I really…” Vance finally lost his cool and shot up from his seat.
“Where do you think you’re going?” Jenny demanded, fork in hand, like she’d skewer him the second he made a move to go look for Catherine.
Then, without a word of warning, he reached out, grabbed Rebecca’s hand, and yanked her out of her seat.
“Are you guys stupid or something?” Vance’s voice rose in frustration. “To throw Jenny’s logic right back at you–what kind of history do I share with her? And what kind of history do I share with you? Why would I favor her?”
“Yeah, what kind of history?” Rebecca challenged flatly, genuinely curious to hear his excuse this time.
“With her? It’s purely, strictly a classmate connection. I bought those things entirely because I wanted to repay her mother for the help she provided while my grandmother was in the hospital.
“Her mother managed all the post–op follow–up schedules, and she even went out of her way to source imported medications that were impossible to find through regular channels.”
Vance paused, taking a ragged breath. “I knew your family lived abroad, and that sourcing those medications would have been effortless for you. But back then… you wouldn’t even give me the time of day.”
Rebecca was speechless.
Why did he always format it as if she abandoned him? It sounded like she was some heartless, toxic betrayer, while he was the real unfaithful one.
