Their well-crafted speeches and fluent delivery stood out even among the top students from across the city. There was almost no suspense; the two of them walked away with the absolute highest scores of the event.

Because the tournament maintained strict fairness by announcing the tallies on the spot, the organizing committee only realized, after the results were locked in, that the two champions came from the same school.

Although it made the final rankings look a bit unbalanced, the scores had already been proclaimed publicly and could not be altered. And just like that, Rebecca and Darren swept the first-place grand prizes.

This was a monumental triumph for their high school. Even though the competition didn’t offer any bonus points for SATs, who didn’t love bringing home massive prestige and honor?

In fact, the administration hadn’t harbored any real expectations for a first-place finish this year. While they were a highly regarded traditional public institution with excellent teaching standards, Soliaridge boasted elite private schools with even stronger French programs.

The volume wasn’t particularly loud, but it was perfectly pitched-just clear enough for Jenny to catch it, and just clear enough for Vance, who was standing a short distance away in the boys’ line, to hear it too.

Jenny whipped her head around but failed to locate the speaker. Yet the moment she turned back around, the malicious voice flared up again.
