After the car stabilized, Lottie sat in shock. It took her a long moment to catch her breath before she turned to check on Grace.
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," Grace replied, rubbing her forehead.
Lottie unbuckled her seatbelt. "I'll go take a look."
She got out and circled the vehicle, only to find a caltrop deeply embedded in the rear right tire.
Lottie glanced at the embassy, which was now just steps away, and shrugged.
Whatever, they could walk the rest of the way.
Grace stepped out of the car.
The two women approached the embassy together. Upon learning that Grace was the mother of the missing child, they were swiftly escorted inside.
"Here's some hot tea."
A steaming paper cup was pressed into her hands.
Grace looked up.
It was an embassy staff member, a young Cardenian woman with a ponytail.
"Thank you," Grace said, accepting the kind gesture.
"Don't worry, Ms. Hart," the staff member comforted her softly, taking a seat beside Grace. "The ambassador has already contacted the Svealand police. As long as the child is still within the borders, we will absolutely bring her back."
"Are you sure... we can find her?"
Grace murmured softly.
"Of course," the staff member said firmly. "This is the embassy, your home away from home. No matter what happens, Carden will always be your strongest support."
Grace nodded, though she still seemed a little dazed.
"What's wrong?"
Lottie walked over after finishing the registration paperwork. Seeing Grace's red-rimmed eyes, she frowned instantly.
"Are you feeling sick?"
Lottie sat beside Grace and reached out to feel her forehead.
"You don't have a fever."
Grace shook her head, holding back her tears as she forced a small smile. "I'm fine. It's just... it feels so surreal."
