Chapter 383 They’re Here

“So much had happened recently; it’s plausible the show’s producers have finally sent proper security

A wave of cautious optimism swept through most contestants at the sight of the descending vessels

Only one competitor, a former soldier, sensed something was off.

His brow furrowed as he studied the approaching starship’s silhouette. “That hull’s been modified illegally, No civilian craft looks like that. Stay sharp.”

The words had barely left his mouth when a cannon turret slid smoothly out from the ship’s underbelly Its cold muzzle swiveled around, locking onto the heart of their camp.

The former soldier’s words snapped everyone out of their brief hope. The situation clicked.

“Incoming! Everyone, scatter!”

A lion beastkin shouted, his first instinct oddly fixated, “My game haul’s still in the shack!”

The female beside him smacked the back of his head. “Forget the haul! You’ll be dead meat!”

From their vantage point near the Starcore Ore cave, Layla and Liam watched the pirates initiate their assault.

Layla’s gaze snapped to Mia, whose face was a mask of stunned confusion. “You did signal them, didn’t you?” Layla’s voice was ice.

Mia flinched, panic rising. “I planted the beacon exactly where you said! I swear!”

Layla’s eyes narrowed, darting back to the ominous ship now settling on the camp’s outskirts.

She turned to Liam, her expression grim. “What now? If we don’t help, the others are sitting ducks.”

Liam weighed their options, his features tense. “Carson and the show’s guards are still at camp. We can’t risk a diversion.”

Truth be told, the camp was hardly in any danger. Aside from Carson, the program’s security crew was still stationed there.

Watching over their captive and protecting the ore deposit took priority.

If this was a feint to draw them away, rescuing Leonard and his gang would become child’s play.

Nodding in agreement, Layla decided to hold their position.

She glanced at Emily, who was watching the distant chaos with visible worry. “Maybe you should check on Jacob and the others?”

Emily shook her head, her composure returning. “General Hartwell is right. The camp has more defenders. We’d just be in the way. Any word on when Galactic Guard reinforcements will arrive?”

It wasn’t that she was callous. It was her training-the discipline of command-that allowed her to maintain

a cold, clear-headed assessment of the situation

If Jacob was already caught in the attack, rushing over now would only be for body retrieval That wouldn’t help anyone.

Layla gave her shoulder a reassuring squeeze.

A silent understanding passed between them.

As they observed, a pattern emerged.

The pirates’ attack, while menacing, lacked lethal intent.

They seemed to deliberately avoid the structures, especially Layla’s own cabin.

Realization dawned on Layla.

“They need Shane alive. This is just a warning shot.”

Liam nodded grimly. Their decision to stay put was vindicated.

Then, a new development. Two more pirate vessels pierced the sky of Planet A13. They were heading straight for the Thunder Pterosaur’s mountain lair-the exact spot where Mia had planted the decoy signal.

Layla let out a breath of relief.

Perfect.

A cold smile touched Layla’s lips before she turned her attention back to Mia, who had gone pale. “How many ships do you have?”

Mia bit her lip, hesitating.

Without a second thought, Layla pressed the blade of her long knife against Mia’s throat, her voice cold and sharp. “They’re here now. You’re no use to me anymore. I could kill you right here.”

Something in Layla’s expression told Mia she meant every word. A violent shudder ran through her. “O- only three,” she stammered. “Three ships of this size.”
