Chapter 384 Sibling Bond Ran Deep

Layla’s mouth twitched as she stared at him, too exasperated for words.

Typical. Give someone an inch of praise, and they’ll claim a mile of credit.

With an exaggerated roll of her eyes, she turned her attention back to the sky.

The three starships that had descended were now fanning out, each heading for a different sector.

The Thunder Pterosaur would likely cripple half the crew on two of them.

Their job now was simply to hold out until the military or Galactic Guard arrived.

Liam lifted a signal tracker, watching the red dots crawl across its display. A faint smile touched his lips.

“Military’s close,” he said, tossing a glance Layla’s way.

From his station, Oliver looked up. “Guard units have breached the upper atmosphere.”

Barring any more surprises, the secret of the Starcore Ore cavern should remain safe.

Layla allowed herself a slow exhale of relief.

The moment was shattered by a sudden blur of motion. A figure lunged from the shadows, aiming straight for the restrained Leonard.

In a flash, he had his brother in a desperate clutch and was dragging him toward a rocky outcrop.

Layla was the first to react. Her gaze sharpened, fixing on the newcomer’s face. It was Roger, who had disappeared.

A cold, humorless smile spread across Layla’s face. “Well, well. Didn’t realize the sibling bond ran so deep. Risking everything for your little brother, Roger?”

Roger met her stare, his eyes brimming with raw hatred. A wild, grating laugh escaped him. “Just you wait. Taylor is coming. You’re dead, Layla.”

The sheer, unhinged confidence in his voice made Layla snort with genuine amusement. “Listen to you. Anyone would think you’d called down a planet-cracker, not just some backup.”

Her open contempt seemed to strip away Roger’s last shred of restraint. A murderous aura erupted from him.

With a swift slash, he severed the bindings on Leonard.

The two brothers exchanged a wordless glance. Their bodies shimmered and dissolved into two towering. coiled serpents. They reared up in unison, hissing hostilely and ready to strike.

As she watched the twin snakes writhe and posture, Layla’s nose wrinkled in distaste.

Even back in the apocalypse, snakes had topped her list of most-hated creatures.

Shippery, hidden, always ready to deliver a fatal strike from the dark-just like these two spirit serpent beastkin.

Annoying. Why can’t they all be more like Shane? Obedient and pleasant.

Seeing the brothers shift into attack stances, George, Oliver, Liam, and Emily immediately closed ranks around Layla.

As she turned, her eyes caught another movement: Mia, edging furtively toward a crevice.

Layla’s eyebrow arched.

“Going somewhere? Trying to slip away while we’re busy?” she asked, her tone deceptively light.

Mia froze, shoulders stiffening. She turned back slowly, her gaze skittish. “I-I just thought I should get clear Stay out of the line of fire.”

In three quick strides, Layla was upon her. A hand shot out, closing around Mia’s throat.

Her breath hitched, her eyes widening in terror.

From their first meeting, Mia had sensed Layla was different from other females.

Even those in high command rarely carried this kind of innate, chilling authority-the aura of a natural- born ruler, a queen.

What Mia didn’t know was that Layla had clawed her way out of mountains of the undead. She was no greenhouse flower.

The brutal world she’d survived had forged her, and the mantle of leadership, though often kept sheathed, had never truly left her.

It was simply that Layla seldom showed that side of herself before.

Layla leaned in, her voice dropping to a lethal whisper. “Let me be perfectly clear. Stay put. Do anything sneaky again…”

She let the threat hang, her narrowed eyes finishing the sentence,
