Shortly after Cassian left, Maya heard a knock at her door. She thought it was Cassian who had forgotten something, so she didn’t bother to change; she just wrapped herself in a robe and

opened the door, but was greatly surprised to see Fay.

“What are you doing here?”

Fay quickly glanced around the room, and judging by how Maya was dressed and the messy bed,

she knew she hadn’t slept alone.

“Are you still seeing your human lover?”

“That’s none of your business.”

“Maya, you shouldn’t be with him; it will only make things more difficult.”

“That’s my problem, not yours.”

Fay didn’t want to argue with Maya, so he changed the subject.

“I received a message from the queen yesterday; we’ve been ordered to return, so pack your things, we’re leaving today.”

“What?!”

“But what about the alliance?”

“I’ve already requested an answer for today.”

“Why so soon?”

“Maya, I can’t keep waiting for help that we may never receive; we must return regardless of the

future that awaits us.”

“What do you mean by that?”

Fay turned around and said to her,

“Pack your things, we’ll leave as soon as possible.”

“Wait, Fay, could you give me a little more time?”

“I’m sorry, Maya, but you’ve had enough time; I can’t give you anymore.”

Fay began to walk away, and Maya shouted at him,

“And if I refuse to go with you?”

“I don’t advise you to do that; if you refuse to return the queen will send more soldiers to fetch you,

and I assure you they won’t be as kind as I am.”

Maya slammed the door shut, feeling both furious and sad. She didn’t want to return to the land of fairies because, although Cassian had told her that Alessandro and Abril had already accepted an alliance, she knew she had blood ties with the queen, and she wouldn’t leave her no matter what

deal they offered.

Tears began to roll down her cheeks, overwhelmed by the anger and helplessness of not being

able to do as she wished.

“I hate this, I hate it.”

She cried for a while, then took her fairy clothes out of the closet. After changing, she looked at herself in the mirror and felt strange wearing those clothes again; they were lighter, softer, and more comfortable, but she had stopped wearing them shortly after arriving in the human world because those clothes reminded her of her identity and the ties that bound her to the land of

fairies.

After gathering her things, she went to find Cassian to tell him that Fay had demanded she leave that very day. The day before, he had mentioned that they had accepted the alliance with the fairies, but she hadn’t asked many questions, so she didn’t know what would happen.

She headed to the main palace and encountered Cassian in one of the corridors.

When Cassian saw her dressed in fairy clothes, he knew what it meant. She was ready to leave.

A shadow of sadness crossed her face, and he approached her and said,

“I see you’re ready to go.”

“You already knew?”

“Fay told me this morning.”

Maya pressed her lips to keep her tears from falling. He placed his hand on her cheek, a gentle and sweet caress that Maya found comforting.

“Maya, why that face? It’s not like we’re going to be separated; I’m going with you too, and this time I’ll bring you back with me.”

Maya couldn’t bring herself to lie, so she said nothing and simply hugged him, wishing with all her

might that it was true, that she could return with them.

Cassian said to her,

“I need to pack my things. Will you come with me?”

“Of course.”

Maya accompanied Cassian to his room. While he packed a bag with a change of clothes and some weapons blessed with light magic, she remembered Abril and asked.

“Is Abril coming with us too?”

“Yes, she is also getting ready to leave.”

“Is she okay?”

“Don’t worry, she’s fine.”

After finishing packing his things, Cassian extended his hand to Maya and said,

“Let’s go, let’s not keep that fairy waiting.”

“Yes.”

“By the way, do you know where he is?”

“I have a good idea of where he might be. Let’s go.”

They headed to where the elves were meeting with Fay, Ethan, and Dantriel. In the end, they had also accepted the alliance with the fairies.

“I guess only Abril is missing.”

Maya mentioned as she approached Fay.

At that moment, Abril appeared and said,

“I’m here. I saw you pass by so I followed you. We can leave whenever you want.”

Dantriel said,

“The journey to the land of the fairies will be long and tiring. Are you okay?”

“Yes, I’m perfectly fine.”

Fay said,

“Actually, that’s not the case. We can get there more quickly. Follow me.”

They followed him to the garden to a large tree. Fay placed his hand on the tree, and the trunk became bright.

“This entrance will take us directly to the land of the fairies. We just have to go through it.”
