Who was her real mother?

That was a question that Alessandro and Cassian couldn’t stop asking themselves. They had known the kind queen, the loving mother, and the sweet wife; but in reality, they didn’t know much about their mother. Since they had never met their maternal relatives, there was no one to ask about her.

Alessandro asked, “Have you discovered anything else in that book?”

Barto hesitated for a moment, unsure whether to tell them or not. Maya asked him, “What’s going on,

Barto? Why aren’t you saying anything?”

“It’s just that I’m not very sure if I should say this or not.”

“I’m just as intrigued as they are, so speak up and don’t hold anything back.”

Barto sighed heavily. He could never refuse his sister’s requests.

“Alright, many of the stories in this book are true, or at least the ones that I know I can say are. They are stories that don’t belong to humans, so no human knows about them, because each species tends to keep their stories very well–fairies, elves, and dwarves–because they think that their weaknesses are found

within their stories.”

“Are you sure about what you’re saying?”

“Um… not really. My father told me this when he was drunk. He usually keeps the information he knows discreet, even though Maya and I are his children. He never gave us more information than necessary. That’s why, until recently, we didn’t even know that fairy blood ran through our veins.”

Maya nodded, agreeing with her brother, and added, “When I confronted him for not telling us the truth

about our lineage, he said that knowing wouldn’t have served us any purpose and turned around, ignoring

the thousands of questions we had.”

Barto continued, “What I mean is, if your mother knew all these stories, it means that she wasn’t just a

mere human. I say this without offending the late queen; she did a great job as a queen. But for other

species, humans are insignificant. That’s why half–breeds are not very common nor cherished. For them, Maya, I, your wife, and your daughter are beings that should have never existed.”

Barto looked at the little princess and said, “That’s why I would advise you to carefully take care of your

daughter. If the queen of the elves comes to know of her existence, I’m sure she will come for her, so you

should try to find a way to hide those beautiful golden eyes. Just by looking at her eyes, one can recognize her lineage.”

Alessandro was aware of that, which is why in all the portraits they had of Lissana, she had brown eyes and not golden ones.

“Don’t you know anything else?”

“No, maybe my father does, but he will never tell me. Even though he created the guild of information, my father is not very communicative, to say the least.”

“Alright, thank you very much for what you’ve told us.”

“I’m sorry I couldn’t be of more help.”

“No, you’ve been very helpful. Thanks for coming.”

Alessandro approached Maya to take Lissana, but she started crying when he tried to do it. She wanted to be with Maya.

“I don’t know what’s wrong with her; she just wants to be with you.”

“I know, there’s no way she’ll let go of me. Maybe I remind her of Abril.”

“Yes, it must be that. I’ll leave her in your care for a while longer, and I’ll go test the collars.”

“Alright.”

When Alessandro passed by Cassian, he said to him, “I need your help, so come with me.”

“But…”

“Come on.”

Cassian ended up following his brother. As they walked down the hallway, he asked, “Why did you make

me come?”

“Because I want you to help me, and besides, you were extra there.”

“That’s not true!”

“Maya’s brother ignored you the whole time, and when he wasn’t, it seemed like he wanted to kill you with his gaze.”

“Even if you don’t believe it, I did you a favor by taking you out of that room.”

After Cassian and Alessandro left, Maya said to her brother while playing with Lissana, “Don’t blame

Cassian for my decision. He’s not to blame for anything.”

“I can’t. If it weren’t for him, you would have never gone to the fairy land and would have been away from

1. us. I can’t help but blame him for keeping us apart from you.”

“That was my decision, which he opposed, by the way.”

“Why don’t you come back home at least for a while?”

“I’ll go see our father and everyone in the guild, but not right now.”

Maya fell silent for a moment, then asked, “Barto, what you said about the stories in that book, is it true?”

“Yes.”

“Barto, how much does Dad know about fairies?”

“I don’t know exactly what he knows about fairies. Like I said before, I only know what he says when he’s drunk, but I think Dad is hiding many secrets.”

Just like me, Maya thought.

The pixie that followed Maya everywhere suddenly appeared in front of Barto, startling him.

“Is that a fairy?”

The pixie started flying around Barto. She stretched her hair and flew close to his face to see his eyes.

“So this is your brother. Everyone in the fairy land will want to meet him.”

Maya caught the pixie in her hand and said to her, “What do you think you’re doing?! I clearly told you that I would crush you if you let anyone else see you.”

“But he’s also a fairy; why should I hide from him?”

With a murderous look, Maya told her, “Disappear.”

The pixie disappeared. Barto stared at his sister and asked her, “What was that fairy doing here?”

“She’s been chasing me since I came back from the fairy land.”

“Why?”

Maya didn’t want to tell her brother that the fairy was there to try to convince her to take her back to the fairy land before she weakened completely and ended up dying. That’s why she made the pixie disappear, because she didn’t want her to mention it. And since she couldn’t lie to her brother without him noticing,

she decided to tell him the partial truth.

“She is here to try to convince me to return to the land of the fairies.”

“Was she sent by the fairy queen?”

“Yes.”

“So she hasn’t given up on you yet.”

“Apparently not. But let’s stop talking about me. Tell me how you’ve been instead. Are you still dating that elf girl you mentioned last time we met?”

“I don’t know.”

“What do you mean you don’t know?”

“Our relationship is complicated.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m a half–breed, half fairy and half human, and she is an elf.”

Part IF A Complicated Relationship

“I guess you’re right, it seems complicated.”

“I love her, and I know she feels the same way about me, but the last time we saw each other, she said it was better not to see each other again. I think she’s afraid of what the elves will say if they find out she’s dating someone like me. I may never be able to see her again.”

Maya could see the sadness on her brother’s face. She told him, “If she loves you, I’m sure you will see her

again.”

“How can you be so sure?”

“Because if you truly love someone, you can’t be apart from them, and I know because I can’t be apart from my beloved either. So don’t lose hope, she will come back for you.”
