Part II: Surrounded by enemies

Alessandro was very worried about Lissana. Her fever wasn’t going down, and it seemed like she

was getting worse.

Maya had been taking care of her all day and was feeling exhausted, but that was nothing compared to how she had been feeling before Abril infused her magic into her. Although she hadn’t thought much about it, the truth was that she was surprised that she still felt good. But she knew it was only an illusion, that her health would deteriorate again at any moment.

Maya was so lost in her thoughts that she didn’t notice when Cassian entered the room until she heard him speak.

Lessan! We have a problem!

What’s going on?

There’s an army surrounding the palace, and from their banners, they appear to be elves.

But how? Why haven’t the alarms sounded?

I think they teleported.

Maya, take care of Lissana. Cassian, stay with them.

Lessan, don’t you want me to go with you?

No, stay with them and protect them. I’ll take care of them.

You’re crazy! It’s an army!

Alessandro put his hand on his brother’s shoulder and said, That’s why I want you to stay with them. If there’s any trouble, run with them.

But

Promise me that if the palace falls, you’ll run without looking back.

Okay, I promise. But promise me you won’t do anything stupid.

I promise.”

Alessandro approached Lissana, kissed her forehead, and said, Daddy will be back soon.

Then he turned to Cassian and Maya. Please, take care of my little girl.

We will, they responded at the same time.

Alessandro headed for the entrance where the elven army was. On his way, he ran into Taren, who said, I heard we were under attack. Who’s attacking us?

They’re not attacking yet, they’ve only surrounded the royal palace.

But who would dare do such a thing?

It’s the elven army.

But what are they doing here? Why are they attacking us? I thought we were on good terms with

them.

I don’t think their intention is to attack us, otherwise they would have done so already. I think they just want to show that they are prepared for war and thus be able to negotiate our surrender, although those are just assumptions of mine. Now we will see what they have really come for.

Alessandro used his wind to create a barrier around himself and appeared before them. He searched for Dantriel or Ethan, but they didn’t seem to be anywhere. That only made his concern even greater; there was no one familiar to negotiate with. Alessandro filled his lungs with air and spoke in a loud voice so that he could be heard clearly.

I am Alessandro Veriatte, King of Cosset. Why are you surrounding my palace? Am I to take this

action as a declaration of war?

A blonde woman stepped forward from among the soldiers, and two more followed behind her, their weapons ready to block any attack.

The closer the blonde woman got, the tenser Alessandro became, as the woman’s features were familiar to him. She bore a strong resemblance to Abril.

She continued to advance until she was in front of him. Since you have introduced yourself, I will

do the same.

Her golden eyes were just like Abril’s, yet completely different. Abril’s were soft and warm, while this woman’s were cold and fierce like a lion’s. In a firm voice, she made her introduction.

I am Enora Babette, Queen of Arkala, the Elven Kingdom.

And to what do I owe the visit of the Elven Queen? To what do I owe this affront?

I see no anger in your eyes, only fear. That means you already know why I’m here. I’ve come for the

halfbreed.

I don’t know what you’re talking about. There’s no Halfbreed here.

It’s useless to try to deceive me. Dantriel has already told me all about the halfbreed. If I remember correctly, her name is Abril, so hand her over to me or face my wrath.

Hand her over to you? Why would I do such a thing?

Because if you don’t, I will reduce your kingdom to ashes.

Alessandro created a strong gust of wind and responded with a defiant voice, I will not hand over

my wife, and if it is a fight you want, a fight you shall have.

Enora approached Alessandro, and with her magic, she nullified his strong wind. With a swift movement, she grabbed Alessandro by the neck with one hand, lifting him slightly off the ground, and said, I don’t want to spill unnecessary blood, human king. I just want you to hand over the halfbreed to me. So why don’t you stop playing brave? You have no chance of beating me. So tell

me, where is the halfbreed?

Although Enora didn’t look thin, Alessandro was surprised to be lifted off the ground by her, as she was much stronger than she appeared.

The soldiers behind Alessandro pointed their bows at Enora; the archers behind Enora did the

same.

Alessandro struggled until he broke free of her grip, moved away from her, and said, You can go back the way you came. She’s not here.

Enora could sense other users of light magic, which is why she had made the decision to personally go and look for the halfbreed. Because even though they denied she was there, Enora

could feel her energy.

I already told you it’s useless to try to fool me. I can feel her energy. I know she’s in the palace, and I also know that her magic is getting out of control.

Alessandro was sure that Abril was not in the palace, but seeing the look of certainty on the queen’s face, he doubted it for a moment. Then he wondered if Now she was referring to Lissana and not Abril, but her power had not yet awakened, so here he came to the conclusion that it was all a bluff to get what she wanted.

Enora could feel how that magic was in chaos, so she thought to use that as a weapon.

I can feel her repressed magic consuming her. If you refuse to hand her over to me, she will end up dying.
