Part II: Welcome Home
Maya and Cassian met with Barto in the dining room. After breakfast, both headed to the entrance. Cassian gave Maya a kiss and said, “Take care of yourself.”
“You too.”
“Come back soon, remember, I’ll be waiting for you.”
“I could never forget that. See you soon, Cassian.”
Cassian turned to Barto. “Take good care of Maya.”
“She’s my sister, you don’t even need to say it.”
Barto mounted a horse that had been prepared for them and extended his hand to help Maya up. As they moved away from the palace, Maya kept waving her hand, saying goodbye to Cassian until she could no longer see him.
“Are you sure you want to travel using a teleportation scroll?” Barto asked.
“Yes, I want to get there as soon as possible. I don’t have much time, Barto.”
Barto didn’t ask any more questions or make any other comments until they left the city. He pulled a scroll
from his bag and asked his sister, “Are you ready?”
“Yes, let’s go.”
Barto tore the scroll, and in the blink of an eye, they found themselves on the outskirts of Farell. Maya
hadn’t been to her hometown in a while, and the familiar sight made her feel nostalgic.
“Maya, are you okay?” Barto asked, turning his body to look at her. The teleportation had caused her some nausea, but it wasn’t anything she couldn’t handle.
“I’m fine, Barto.”
Barto tugged at the reins of the horse, and they continued their journey. When they arrived at the guild’s
tavern, Wallas put down the wine jugs he was carrying and ran to hug Maya.
“Little one, I’m so happy to see you here. I thought I’d never see you again.”
“I’m happy to see you too, Wallas. Do you know where my father is?”
“He hasn’t come by. Do you want me to send someone to look for him?”
“No, I’ll go myself, thank you, Wallas.”
Wallas gave her another hug before returning to the bar and said, “Welcome home, Maya.”
Maya smiled sweetly at Wallas before he went back to storing the wine jugs. Some of the informants who worked for the guild came over to greet her as well.

Afterward, Maya and Barto headed to their house. It was only a few streets away from the guild, so it didn’t take them long to get there. The house wasn’t very big, but it had a beautiful rose garden that their father took great care of. Despite having enough money, their father never wanted to move to a bigger place. He always said that the house was perfect–it wasn’t so big that they wouldn’t see each other, nor
so small that they would bump into one another.
Maya approached the door and took the key from beneath a flowerpot by the entrance.
“I thought they would have removed the key from here.”
“I wanted to take it away, but Dad said to leave it there, just in case you ever came back.”
A warm smile spread across her lips. She unlocked the door and looked for her father throughout the house. He was in his study. Maya burst in like a storm, ran into her father’s arms, and sat on his lap.
“Maya! When did you return?”
“I just got back today. How have you been, Dad?”
“I’ve been well, but you don’t look so good. You’ve lost a lot of weight. Has that little prince not treated you
well?”
“Of course not, Dad. He’s treated me very well.”
“Are you really happy with him?”
“Yes, Dad, I couldn’t be happier. Without a doubt, I made the right choice.”
Barto entered the room. Seeing Maya sitting on their father’s lap brought back memories; she always did the same thing when she was little.
“You’re still acting like a child, Maya.”
“I’m happy to be home. Leave me alone, Barto.”
“I thought you’d never come back.”
“I’ve only been gone a few days, Dad.”
“But it felt like an eternity. In your absence, I’ve had to take care of everything.”
“I do it every day. You shouldn’t complain about a few days where I leave you in charge.”
“When I gave up my position, it was because I didn’t want to continue running the information guild anymore. It’s exhausting. I don’t have time to tend to my garden.”
“And you’ve done an excellent job with the garden. It’s beautiful,” Maya said.
Barto looked at his sister, his gaze silently saying, “Stop encouraging him.”
“It’s been so long since the three of us have been together. Let’s have a nice meal,” Maya suggested, ignoring her brother’s reproachful look, which clearly asked what.she was doing.

Maya had come to talk to her father, but she didn’t want to tell him she was dying after so much time apart. As she walked toward the kitchen, she whispered to her brother, “I’ll tell him later.”
Once alone, Rayan, their father, asked, “Why has Maya come?”
“I think she misses you.”
Ryan stared at his son, his intense red eyes fixed on him. Barto looked away and changed the subject.
“How have things been in my absence?”
