Part II: Secret Passagep
Cassian followed Alessandro to his office, where his brother began searching for something on his desk. Unable to bear the uncertainty any longer, Cassian asked, “Lessan, what did you want to talk about?”
“While I was in the elven kingdom, I discovered something about our mother, about who she really was,
and about who we are.”
“What?!”
“It seems our mother wasn’t an ordinary person.”
“Tell me, what did you find out?”
Alessandro continued rummaging through his desk, which made Cassian even more nervous. “What
exactly are you looking for?”
“I’m looking for the storybook that Mom wrote. I had it here somewhere.”
“It’s on the shelf behind you.”
Alessandro turned around, saw the book, took it, and said, “How did it get here? I was sure I had it on my
desk.”
“I put it there. Your desk was cluttered, so I organized it a bit.”
Alessandro began flipping through the pages of the book, which irritated Cassian. “Can you stop that and tell me what you discovered in the elven kingdom?”
Alessandro stopped flipping through the pages and responded, “Our mother was part of an ancient lineage, the Guardians, and now we are too.”
Cassian was both surprised and confused by what Alessandro was telling him. “And what does that
mean?”
“From what I understand, we are the only ones who can close the gates of Hades.”
“But the gates of Hades are closed, and the rift in Laios has also been sealed.”
“The gates of Hades will be opened, and there’s nothing we can do to prevent it.”
“Does that mean everything we’ve done has been in vain?”
“We’ve delayed the opening of the gates of Hades, and by doing so, we’ve prevented many deaths, so I
don’t think it has all been in vain.”
Cassian remained silent, trying to digest what Alessandro was telling him.
“Cas, I saw our mother. She told me that there’s a hidden door in the palace that leads to the Guardians‘
Room.”
“The Guardians‘ Room? What’s that?”

“It’s a room where you can speak with any deceased Guardian. We can see our mother and our siblings once more.”
“And where is this room?”
“That I don’t know. Mom didn’t want to tell me. She only said to look in this book, that I would find the answer to my question there.”
“And why didn’t she just tell you outright?”
“I don’t know.”
Alessandro started searching through the stories in the book for something about the Guardians‘ door but couldn’t find anything.
“Lessan, what exactly did Mom say to you?”
“Look in the storybook I wrote for you when you were children. There you will find the answer to your
question; that was all.”
“Hmm… And what exactly are we looking for?”
“It’s a door that connects to a room where you can find the portraits of all the Guardians and consult them
about any doubt or problem. Apparently, that place connects to the spiritual world.”
Cassian remembered a story that mentioned something similar. He took the storybook from Alessandro and began searching through the pages until he found it.
“It must be this one, the story of Valor, the boy who crossed into the spiritual world through a secret
passage.”
Alessandro remembered that their mother had mentioned the door being hidden behind a secret passage and added, “Mother mentioned something about a secret passage; it must be this one. But where is that
passage?”
“I know where it is, although I never knew if it was real since I could never open it.”
Alessandro looked at him, silently asking a question. “How did you discover it?”
To which Cassian replied, “When I was a child, I loved these stories. I spent hours pretending to be the characters in the book. One day, I started looking for places that resembled the passage in the book and
found a place that looked like it.”
“Should we go check if it’s that place?”
“Wait, before we do that, explain to me properly what this Guardian thing is. I feel like you’ve only told me
half of it.”
“We are like the leaders of all the clans, and all those clans owe us obedience. It’s not like we have any special power; it’s just that we are the only ones who can close the gates of Hades once they’re opened.”

“Wait, wait, what do you mean we are the leaders of all the clans and that they owe us obedience?”
“It’s exactly as you said.”

“But which clans are those?”
“The fairies, the elves, the humans, and the mages.”
“The fairies owe us obedience?”
