Part II: Family Gathering

When it was time for the meal, everyone gathered in the dining room. It had been a long time since Alessandro last had his whole family together. He raised his glass high and said, I propose a toast to this gathering.

Cassian lifted his glass and said, To the reunited family.”

Everyone held their glasses aloft, even Lissana and Uzziel, who raised their glasses with juice to join the others. The meal was joyful and lively. Lissana felt extremely happy and, for the first time, complete, because her family was now whole.

After eating, everyone went for a walk in the garden. Lissana and Uzziel ran everywhere, admiring the flowers. Abril sent one of the maids to fetch Koda, her pet fox, because she wanted to show him to

Lissana.

When the maid brought her pet, Abril called them.

Lissana, Uzziel, come closer.

Lissana could see from afar that her mother had a reddish ball of fur in her arms. She approached with

curiosity and, upon seeing that her mother had a fox in her arms, she asked, Is it real?

Koda was so still in Abril’s arms that Lissana must have thought he was a stuffed animal. Abril laughed

and moved Koda a little; he opened his eyes and moved lazily in her arms.

Yes, he is real. This is my friend, Koda.

He’s beautiful. Can I touch him?

Of course.

Abril leaned down so Lissana could touch him and also encouraged Uzziel to touch him. Both children stroked the fox’s reddish fur, which was soft and fluffy. A big smile spread across the children’s faces as they asked in unison, Can we play with him?

Of course.

Abril handed the fox to Lissana and said to her, Take good care of him; he’s a very dear friend of mine.

Lissana and Uzziel sat on the grass, and Alessandro told them, You shouldn’t sit on the ground; I’ll ask for

a blanket.

In the land of the fairies, sitting on the grass or walking barefoot on it was normal, as for the fairies, it was a way to connect with nature; even the fairy queen used to do it. But in the human

kingdom, it was not well regarded for someone as noble as Lissana and Uzziel to do so. Maya had lived in the land of the fairies for so long that she had completely forgotten about the absurd rules that limited humans.

They’re used to sitting on the grass and running barefoot, so they’ll be fine. Let them be.

Despite their noble birth, Lissana and Uzziel had grown up differently, and Abril understood how hard it could be for them to follow unfamiliar rules she still found useless. Since she had already experienced it. She placed her hand on Alessandro’s arm and said to him.

Let them be, Lessan; let them have fun.

Alessandro said nothing more, and Lissana and Uzziel continued playing with Koda while their parents talked, sitting on benches nearby.

They don’t know the rules of this world, said Maya.

They have grown up seeing the fairies, who have great freedom, so have a little patience with them.

We understand. Fairies tend to live differently; what’s not right for us is right for them.

We lived there so long that I forgot the human kingdom is governed by different rules and customs, especially for nobles, since those rules don’t matter to commoners.

Maya said as she looked up at the sky. Cassian put an arm around Maya’s shoulders and said, Uzziel can do whatever he wants, I don’t mind.

I see you’ve changed; you used to be scandalized all the time when you saw me sitting on the ground.

I suppose being in the land of the fairies for so many years changes anyone.

Even though it was an unimportant comment, those words warmed Maya’s heart. She was glad Cassian

respected that her son was also part fairy and, like her, longed for that freedom.

Barto arrived with his father before dinner, and when Maya saw them, she ran to hug them.

Ryan said to her, Hello, my little one. You have no idea how happy I am to see you again.”

Ryan cupped his daughter’s face, and after looking at her closely, he said, You look much better than the

last time I saw you, which shows you’ve been doing well.

I can no longer be the successor because I married Cassian. The fairy queen now overlooks me, and

sometimes she’s even kind.

I’m glad everything has turned out well. Where is my grandson?

Uzziel was hiding behind his father, and Maya motioned for him to come closer. He approached timidly, and Maya took him in her arms, saying, Uzziel, this is my father and your grandfather.
