“Let me help you.”
“Thanks, Lionel. I really appreciate it.”
Abril spent the day sleeping. When the horn sounded announcing the return of the troops, Abril forced
herself to get up; she had to help the wounded and, above all, wanted to make sure Alessandro was okay.
There were more wounded that day than the day before, with mages and medics running back and forth
attending to the injured. Abril searched for Alessandro with her eyes; he had just crossed the barrier with
Cassian, and to Abril’s relief, he didn’t seem to be injured.
She focused on helping the most seriously injured, since only she could save them. When she finished treating the last seriously injured, she overheard two soldiers murmuring as they watched several elf soldiers pass by.
“How come their army doesn’t have any casualties? That’s terrifying.”
“Yes, maybe they’re not human either; they’re absolute beasts on the battlefield.”

Those elf soldiers seemed to overhear them and turned their gazes towards them, inadvertently catching sight of Abril. Their eyes met for just a moment, but it was enough for them to realize she was like them, since no elf could hide the golden color of their eyes.
They headed towards her, and Abril turned to escape.
“Where are you going?”
Cassian asked as he saw her rush by.
Abril hid behind Cassian. He was about to ask her what was wrong, but then he saw two elves pass by and
understood what was happening; Abril was hiding from them.
“Were they chasing you?”
“I’m not quite sure, a moment ago we exchanged glances, and I think they noticed the color of my eyes.”
“For now, it’s better if you don’t wander around, so they won’t keep looking for you.”
“You’re right.”
“Alessandro really wants to see you. This morning he seemed nervous since you didn’t return to the tent
yesterday.”
“There were many wounded yesterday.”
“Are there many today as well?”
“Yes, but not as many severely wounded, so I can take a break.”
Cassian began to walk, shielding Abril from the elves‘ view, which she appreciated. She didn’t want to
worry about them as they reached Alessandro’s tent. She ran into his arms when she saw him, and he
returned the embrace.
“I’m glad to see you’re okay. You are, right?”
“Yes, and all thanks to you.”
“To me?”
“Yes, your blessing on my armor protected me. I’m safe because of you.”

Dream or a Nightmare
Abril felt a little dizzy, she had been using her magic without resting properly. Alessandro caught her before she fell and asked, “Are you okay?”
“Yes, I just need to rest a bit.”
“You’ve used too much magic, haven’t you?”
“I think I used more than I thought when enchanting your armor.”
Alessandro had planned to ask Abril to enchant Cassian’s armor, but seeing the state she was in, he decided not to tell her. He lifted her into his arms, carried her to the bed, and said, “I told you to rest.”
“And I did…”
“But you kept using your magic even when you hadn’t fully recovered.”
“There were too many wounded, and I couldn’t…”
“I know you couldn’t leave them.”
Abril nodded, and Alessandro gently ran his fingers through her hair. Cassian felt somewhat uncomfortable seeing them so affectionate, which reminded him of Maya and made him feel miserable. He cleared his throat and said, “I’ll leave you two to your flirting.”
Cassian turned around and left the tent before they could say anything; he needed a moment alone. Upon leaving the tent, Cassian headed back to his tent and was greatly surprised to see Ethan.
“What are you doing here?”
“I want to talk to you. Got a minute?”
“Would you go if I said no?”
“No, I’ve seen Sophia’s daughter in the camp. Why was she allowed to come?”
“No one allowed her; she just showed up, and in case, you didn’t know, she’s not easily convinced; she
does as she pleases.”
“Even if she refuses to leave, she can’t be here; it’s too dangerous, and not just because of the monsters.”
“What do you mean?”
“Some elf soldiers have seen her; they know she’s one of us.”
“They’re under your command; can’t you control them?”
“They’re under my command, yet they don’t owe me their loyalty.”
“And what does that mean exactly?”
“That, I don’t know what they might do if they found out who she really is, and damn, she’s part of the elven

After exchanging several kisses, Alessandro paused, holding Abril in his arms, and spoke with a trembling
voice full of destructive guilt.
“I’m sorry.”
“Why are you apologizing?”
“For sending you away, believe me, it was painful to be apart from you.”
Abril knew it was true, at one point she had doubted it, but deep down she knew he was just as sad as she
was about not being together.
“That doesn’t matter anymore. It’s in the past; now we’re together.”
“Even so…”
Abril pulled away a little, placed a finger on Alessandro’s lips, and said.
“Don’t continue with that. We’re together, and from now on, we always will be. I don’t plan to go far from you ever again, so don’t try to push me away because you won’t succeed.”
Alessandro had planned to ask Abril to return to the mage’s tower. Although he was glad to see her, he was very nervous, as this was the battlefield. But when he saw her eyes, he saw total determination; there wasn’t a hint of doubt in them. He knew that no matter what he said, he wouldn’t be able to change her
mind. He gently caressed her face and said,
“I suppose it would be useless to tell you to leave.”
“Yes, so don’t do it.”
“You know this is a very dangerous place.”
“I know, but I don’t know if you noticed before or not, but I’m not as weak as I used to be. Now I can
protect myself and protect you too, and that’s what I plan to do; protect everyone I love.”
Alessandro sighed heavily and said.
“Aby, wars bring out the worst in people. To be honest, I wish you weren’t here, that you wouldn’t see the
horrors of war…”
“I’ve already told you I don’t plan to leave.”
“I know, but even though you’re here, understand that I won’t let you rush into battle.”
“I can defend myself, Lessan.”
“And I’m glad about that, but won’t have to fight unless it’s necessary.”
“But…”

Cassian didn’t know how Maya had gotten there, but he was glad to see her. He hugged her tightly, since he had been separated from her, his only wish and longing was to have her in his arms again.
“You can’t imagine how much I’ve missed you, how much I’ve dreamed of having you like this in my arms.
Tell me this isn’t a dream.”
Maya caressed Cassian’s head and replied.
“No, it’s not a dream. I’m here with you now, in your arms, and I’m real.”
