Part II: The Monster In The Well

Sirius approached Abril when she was alone and asked her, What do you think you’re doing?

Helping.

I can see that, but we don’t have time for that. We’re in a hurry.

Yes, but I can’t leave without helping these people. I can’t abandon them to their fate.”

Sirius sighed and said, I understand that you want to help, but you shouldn’t show your power. It can be

dangerous.

And I don’t plan on doing that. That’s why I said we’re healers.”

I don’t know anything about plants, and Taren knows even less.

That doesn’t matter. We just have to act like healers.

Abril approached the old man she had spoken to before and asked him where the well was. He told her it

was contaminated, but she insisted on seeing it. When they arrived at the well, Abril looked inside, and the

water was black.

The water in this well, like that of the rivers, has turned black. It’s contaminated.

And where do you get water from?

We have been getting it from vendors who come from other kingdoms, but we are running out of money,

so our fate is already set.

I don’t agree. Destiny is not something that will happen to you if you don’t want it to. It’s what you want to happen, so we have to believe that everything will be fine. Don’t you think?

I hope it will be as you say. I have been in this village my whole life. Everyone here is like a big family. I

wouldn’t want to lose them.

And you won’t.

Abril signaled Taren to take the old man away. She needed to be alone to purify the water.

Sir, could you show me where the sick people are?

Of course, follow me.

We’ll go now,Sirius said.

Once they were far enough away so that they couldn’t see what she was doing, Abril put her hand in the water. She could feel something evil and dark coming from the depths. She let her magic flow like a torrent. Little by little, the water became clear. Suddenly, a monster emerged from the water, slimy and

emanating a black liquid.

Before Sirius could do anything, Abril unleashed her silver flames and turned it into ashes.

I think it was that monster that was polluting the water.

Abril put her hand back into the water as if nothing had happened, finished purifying the water, and said, I thought I had finished with all the monsters. It seems I was mistaken. There are still some out there causing havoc.

You have changed a lot.

After all I’ve been through, it would be strange if I was still the same, don’t you think?

Abril glanced at the well; the water looked clean and crystal clear.

That’s done. Now let’s go see the sick.”

How do you plan to explain that you have purified the water?

I don’t plan on doing it. You take care of that. I’ll go see the sick, so come up with a good story and try to help in some way.

Abril started walking away. Sirius sighed and said to himself, I had forgotten how annoying she can be when she wants to be.

Abril went in the direction that Taren and the old man had taken. Halfway there, she came across a girl. She looked thin and exhausted. The girl approached her and, with a hoarse and barely audible voice, asked, Do you have something to eat?

Abril felt her heart break at the sight of the girl. She took an apple from the satchel she still carried on her shoulder and asked, Do you like apples?

The girl nodded vigorously. Abril handed her the apple, and the girl devoured it with a ferocious hunger. Abril caressed her head, used her healing magic, and immediately the girl’s expression changed.

Is it a magical apple?asked the girl with her mouth full. I feel better after eating it.

Abril gave her a gentle smile full of tenderness and answered, That’s right, so keep it a secret.

The girl finished eating what she had in her mouth and said, All my family is sick. If I give them a little, will they get better?

No need to do that. I will go see them, and they will soon be fine.

Do you have more magical apples?

No, but I am a healer. I make sick people get better.

The girl jumped for joy, took Abril’s hand, and dragged her to her house, a small cabin. When Abril entered, she saw a man, a woman, and two young girls lying on the floor. The girl told her, They can’t move. They’re

very

sick. Everyone says they will die, but they won’t, right? You will cure them, won’t you?
