Part II: You Can’t Save Everyone
Abril woke up with a pounding headache. As she tried to sit up, Sirius stopped her.
“Don’t get up,” he said. “You’ll feel worse if you do.”
Abril obeyed and remained lying on the bed. She felt weak and dizzy. She had used too much magic all at once; these were the side effects of depleting her magic. She was afraid to ask how many days she had been asleep, afraid of what had happened while she was unconscious, but she needed to know.
“How long have I been asleep?”
“Just a few hours.”
Abril felt a sense of relief upon hearing Sirius’s answer. But she was still anxious about Alessandro and
Lissana.
“Have you spoken to Alessandro?”

balcony. In the distance, Sirius could see columns of smoke and fire rising to the heavens.
“And what are you doing here? Why aren’t you helping them?”
“My duty is to protect you, not them.”
“But…”
“No matter how much you insist, I will not leave your side.”
Abril clenched the sheets tightly. She hated not being able to do anything to help those people.
She glared accusingly at Sirius for leaving all those people to their fate.
Sirius felt a little uncomfortable under her intense gaze. He sighed heavily and said, “We are in

enemy territory, you are weak and powerless. If someone wanted to attack you, you would have no way to defend yourself. Right now, there is not much difference between you and them. So stop trying to make me feel guilty, because you won’t succeed. No matter how hard you try, you can’t always save everyone.”

Taren arrived at the royal palace in the middle of the night. As he had no time for formalities, he slipped into the palace and went looking for Alessandro directly. He reached his bedroom door, but not daring to enter without further ado, he knocked several times until it opened.
Alessandro’s blood ran cold when he saw Taren in front of him. It could only mean one thing: something had happened to Abril.
“Where is Aby? Did something happen to her?” Alessandro asked, very agitated and with a trembling voice.
“Calm down, Your Majesty. The Queen is fine; she is in the kingdom of Laios.”
Hearing that she was alright, Alessandro felt his soul return to his body.
“Why are you here? You should be protecting my wife.”
“Sirius sent me. There is something urgent I must report.”
Alessandro ushered Taren in. After closing the door, he asked, “What is it you have to report?”
Taren told Alessandro everything that had happened in the kingdom of Laios, including the part where they had faced new monsters. However, he omitted the part where Abril had exhausted all her magic, as he did not want to upset him any further.
“Are you sure my wife is alright?”
“Yes, Your Majesty.”
“Then why isn’t she here? Why didn’t she come with you?”
“She was a little tired after closing the rift to Hades. She needs to rest before using a scroll, as that wouldn’t be good for her.”

Alessandro sensed that Taren wasn’t telling him the whole truth. He asked again, “Are you sure my wife is alright? Because if you’re lying to me, I’ll make you regret it for the rest of your life.”
Taren swallowed hard. The King was looking at him as if he wanted to rip his head off, and for a moment he thought he saw a huge serpent behind him.
“I would never dare lie to Your Majesty.”
“You better not.”
Taren wanted to change the subject because if Alessandro kept looking at him like that, he would end up
telling him everything he knew. So he asked, “What do you plan to do with Princess Lissana, Your
Majesty?”
“Protect her. I won’t let anyone hurt my daughter.”
“And where is the princess? It’s not good for her to be alone.”
“She’s not alone. She’s with Maya and Cassian. She’s safe with them. Are you returning to
Laios?”
Taren had used the artifact Sirius had given him to teleport even though he was not fully recovered. This
had only worsened his condition. He felt tired and heavy; to make a return trip so soon would be madness.
Fearfully, he replied, “I was attacked by a monster. Although Her Majesty the Queen used her magic to
heal me, I am still not fully recovered. I don’t think I can teleport for some time. Besides, I don’t think she
will be in Laios for long.”
Although Alessandro seemed annoyed by his answer, he only said, “Very well. You may retire to rest.”
Taren bowed. “Good night, Your Majesty.”
After saying goodbye, Taren left the room as quickly as he could. He didn’t want the King to regret his
decision and force him to return to Laios because if he did, he was sure he would end up dead.

“If I had a half–breed child, would you lock her up too? Would you take her away from me?”
Without a doubt, the Queen replied, “Yes, I would.”

Kiara turned away. The elves‘ rules were archaic. She had always thought they needed to be changed. Hearing her mother’s answer, Kiara felt disappointed. As she walked away, she said, “Now I understand why Aunt Sophia ran away from this kingdom without a word, because she knew there was no one she
could trust.”
“Kiara!”
Kiara turned around and shouted, “It’s the truth! You support absurd rules, rules that should be changed!
That half–breed, as you call her, is your family.”
“You don’t understand anything, Kiara.”
“It’s true, I don’t understand. I don’t understand why it’s forbidden to love someone of a different race.”
“It is forbidden. That’s all you need to know.”
Kiara hated not getting a straight answer to her questions, but she knew that no matter how much she
insisted, her mother wouldn’t answer. She turned and stormed off.
The Queen’s attendant entered shortly after Kiara left. He bowed and said, “Your Majesty, everything is
ready.”
“Then let’s go.”
“Your Majesty, I don’t think it is wise for you to personally go looking for the half–breed.”
“No, Bleir. I must go.”

Maya woke up to Lissana’s crying. She immediately got up, ran to pick her up, and rocked her back and
forth to calm her down.
The little pixie that followed her like a vengeful spirit appeared before her and said, “There’s something
strange about this child.”
“You’ve been saying that nonstop for days now. What do you mean there’s something strange about her?”
“I don’t know how to say it. I just feel something strange when I see her.”
Cassian began to stir. Maya ordered the pixie to disappear; she didn’t want Cassian to see her.
Lissana’s cheeks were red. At first, Maya thought it was because she had been crying, but after running her hand over her cheeks, she realized that Lissana had a fever.
Hearing Lissana cry, Cassian asked, “Maya, what’s wrong?”
“Lissana has a fever! Call a doctor.”

Cassian jumped out of bed and ran to find a doctor.
Maya stayed behind, comforting the little one, but she wouldn’t stop crying.
Cassian ran into his brother in the hallway.
Seeing Cassian half–dressed and extremely agitated, Alessandro asked, “What’s wrong, Cassian?”
“It’s Lissana…” said Cassian breathlessly.
Alessandro’s blood ran cold, his mind flooded with negative thoughts.
“Where’s Lissana?! Where’s my daughter, Cassian?!”
“She’s in my room. Maya is with her.”
Alessandro didn’t wait for his brother to finish speaking; he ran off to find his daughter.
Cassian didn’t have time, so he didn’t follow him. He went to find the doctor to see Lissana.

Alessandro burst into Cassian’s room. Maya was very surprised to see how Alessandro had entered, but she didn’t say anything. She understood that he must be very worried about his daughter.
“How is Lissana? What happened to her? Who attacked you?”
“What? No one attacked us. Lissana just has a little fever.”
“What?” Didn’t Cassian tell you?”
Alessandro was on edge after hearing that Cira had threatened to steal everything Abril loved. That’s why he had rushed to see Lissana; he feared that Cira had done something to her.
When he heard that Lissana only had a fever, he felt a certain relief, as he had feared the worst.
“I’m sorry, I thought that…”
Alessandro approached and tried to take his daughter in his arms, but she rejected him, crying even
louder.
In the end, Alessandro gave up trying to hold her and simply watched her as Maya cradled her in her arms.
Alessandro put his hand on Lissana’s forehead. She only had a slight fever. He sighed in relief and said,
“Thank God. For a moment, I feared the worst.”
“Why do you say that? Did something happen?”
Alessandro told Maya what Taren had told him, holding nothing back. He told her about the danger lurking
in the shadows.
Maya gently squeezed Lissana’s body and said, “As long as I’m here, I won’t let anyone hurt her. I’ll take care of her, I promise.”
