The next day, Abril woke up in the middle of a nightmare, screaming and crying. Alessandro took her by the shoulders and spoke in a soft, soothing voice.

“Calm down, you’re safe, you’re with me.”

Abril hugged Alessandro, clinging to him tightly, trembling. Alessandro patted her back until she managed to calm down.

“A nightmare?”

Abril nodded.

“Do you want to tell me what it was about?”

“No, I’d rather forget it.”

Alessandro didn’t want to force Abril to talk about her nightmare, so he just hugged her and

said,

“That’s fine, you don’t have to say anything if you don’t want to. Just remember, you’re not alone anymore; I’m here with you.”

“Yes.”

Abril stayed in his arms for a while longer until someone knocked on the door. It was Cassian, wanting to know how she was.

Alessandro said,

“You haven’t eaten anything since yesterday. Do you want breakfast brought to the room, or shall we go to the dining room?*

“Let’s go to the dining room, but first I need to change.”

“I’ll ask someone to come and help you change.”

“Thank you.”

Alessandro released his embrace and was about to get out of bed when he felt Abril holding onto his hand. She said,

“She must have deeper wounds than we imagined.”

“I know her life hasn’t been easy, but I don’t know to what extent. She doesn’t give many details about her past, it’s like she wants to bury them deep in her mind. So, it’s better not to ask her about it.”

“I won’t, don’t worry.”

“I wouldn’t do anything to hurt her,” Cassian thought, as his brother called one of the maids in the hallway to help his wife change her clothes.

Abril had gotten out of bed and was standing by the window, looking at the beautiful white garden. That day, she had dreamed about something from her past, something she would have preferred never to remember again. She looked at her wrists, covered in bandages, which stung a bit. She squeezed one of her wrists, causing herself pain, and repeated in a low voice,

“This is real, what happened before was just a nightmare, just that.”

Someone knocked on the door, startling Abril, her nerves on edge. A woman’s voice spoke,

“I’ve come to help Her Majesty change.”

“Come in.”

The maid curtsied to Abril and placed a basin of water on the table for the princess to wash and clean her body. Then she went to the wardrobe and asked,

“Does Her Majesty wish to wear any particular dress?”

“No, any will do.”

The maid took out a light white dress with pink ribbons, suitable for the heat. She then helped Abril clean herself and change her bandages, as one of them was bloodstained. After helping Abril change, she braided her hair to one side and gave her a white hat in case she went for a walk in the garden.

When Abril left the room, she saw Alessandro at the door. She thought he must already be in the dining room, but he had stayed by the door, waiting for her to be ready. He hadn’t lied when he said he would be nearby. Alessandro offered her his hand and said,

“Let’s go, Cassian is waiting for us in the dining room for breakfast.”

Abril nodded and walked beside him, feeling calmer knowing he was with her.

Cassian was in the dining room. When he saw Abril, the first thing he did was apologize.

“I’m sorry, Aby, I couldn’t protect you even though I said I would.”

“You don’t have to apologize for that, you did everything you could.”

“But it wasn’t enough.”

“For me, it was, and I thank you.”

Abril took her place at the table. That day, breakfast was more extravagant than usual. Abril wondered if it was because Alessandro was joining them that day. Alessandro asked,

“Is it good?”

“Yes, everything is delicious.”

“I’m glad everything is to your liking.”

Abril looked at the food, all the dishes on the table were her favorites. She asked,

“Did you have all this made for me?”

“Yes, I didn’t know what you felt like eating, so I asked them to make your favorite dishes.” Abril felt a strange warmth inside her. She had never before felt what it was like for someone

“Then we’ll leave tomorrow. But since I have the day off today and promised to show you the
