You’re not alone anymore
Cassian had stepped out onto the balcony to get some fresh air. As he did, he saw a man in black armor leaving the mansion. He recognized him immediately; Taren Lacross, the captain of the shadows in the service of the king. Cassian wondered what Taren was doing there. Normally, Taren never left the palace unless it was absolutely necessary, as he was responsible for maintaining order in the king’s absence. The few times he did leave the palace were to carry out high–level missions of utmost importance and confidentiality.
Cassian couldn’t remain in the dark about why Taren had come, so he went to find Lessan to ask him. Alessandro was climbing the stairs, and Cassian waited for him at the bottom, asking with great concern.
“What happened? What was Taren doing here?”
“I don’t think this is the best place to talk about it,” Alessandro replied, continuing to walk.
“Let’s talk in your room.”
Abril heard footsteps in the hallway and Alessandro’s voice. She peeked out of the door just in time to see Alessandro entering into Cassian’s room. She stepped out and stood in front of Cassian’s room. She wanted to ask Cassian who the knight in black armor was but didn’t want to do it in front of Alessandro.
She unintentionally overheard the conversation between Alessandro and Cassian.
“What was Taren doing here, Lessan?”
“King Venobich has started gathering his army. The war will begin soon.”
“And what do you plan to do?”
“I’ll continue with the plan. I’ll inspect the kingdom before returning to the palace.”
“Wouldn’t it be better to return to the palace and start preparing?”
“No, I need to finish inspecting the kingdom. I’ve asked Sirius to reinforce the kingdom’s barriers; the rest will be prepared upon my return.”
“I don’t think this is the best time for that. We should strike first.”
“You’re wrong. I must do it now. There are several spies in the kingdom working for King Venobich. I need to cleanse my kingdom before attacking; otherwise, we will lose. A divided kingdom is a lost kingdom.”

“This inspection is just an excuse to cleanse the kingdom, isn’t it?”
“Yes.”
“Why did you bring Abril with you if you knew this trip was going to be dangerous?”

“I didn’t imagine she could be in any danger, but what happened here won’t happen again. I’ll take good care of my wife.”
“In reality, what happened here was my fault. If she had stayed in the mansion as you ordered, none of this would have happened.”
“You didn’t know what was going on, so don’t blame yourself.”
After hearing this, Abril felt guilty about what her father was doing. She returned to their room, and Alessandro entered shortly after. She was sitting on the bed, hugging her knees. Alessandro approached her and asked, “What’s wrong?”
“Will there be a war?”
“Why do you ask that?”
“I overheard your conversation with Cassian.”
“How much did you hear?”
“Enough to know that my father is behind it all.”
Alessandro hugged her and said, “Don’t worry about that.”
“But…”
“I’ll take care of everything, Abril. Don’t worry about anything.”
“Alright. We should take a bath and wash the sand off our bodies.”
“You can go first.”
Alessandro smiled and said, “I’d rather do it with you.”
