Without realizing it, my fingers touched the crease in the cushion beside me. I smiled faintly, then shook my head, laughing at myself.

“Sienna,” I murmured softly, “don’t be so melancholic.”

I stood up and walked to the window, pulling the curtain open slightly. Morning light came in kindly, reflecting off the wooden floor. Outside, the world moved on as usual neighbors heading to work, the sound of passing motorcycles, small birds perched on power lines. No one knew that in this house, a small family had just parted for a while.

That’s okay.I glanced at the clock. There was still time before noon, time I usually used to write, reread drafts, or simply organize my thoughts. Today felt empty in a good way.
