Sloane
Benedict is awake and alive. Both packs are secure. I know he can’t speak and without a mind link, I can’t communicate with Benedict.
He holds me while I cry, letting the frustration and fear of the last couple of days go. When I’m done, I wipe my face and look at him. He’s still too pale, but his eyes are bright and intense as he focuses on me.
“Do you need anything?” I ask.
He shakes his head no.
“Are you in pain?”
He points to his throat.
“Marrok?”
He shakes his head no again.
“He’ll be back. He’s a strong wolf and when he does, he’ll heal you. Until then, you need to rest and get your strength back,” I
say.
He begins shaking his head, trying to sit up.
“Don’t you dare, Alpha. Your pack is safe. Your pack members are fine. I’m going to check in with Scarlet and Alpha Austin, then I’ll head over there and check on them myself. They’ll be happy to know that you’re awake.”
He pulls my hand to his lips and kisses my knuckles, never looking away from me.
“You scared me, Benedict,” I say softly.
He nods, kissing my knuckles again.
I lean against his bed. “I know we still have some things to work out, but this has shown me that I don’t want to live without you. When you’re healed, when you have a neck for me to mark again, I want us to complete our bond.” 1
He sighs, pulling my hand to his heart and holding it there.
I smile. “I take it you’re in agreement?”
He nods. Then he points to me, then at himself.
“You’re mine too, Benedict.”
He smiles and nods again.
I look around frowning. “This is the first time you’ve been alone. I don’t know where Bethany or your father went. They’ve been here the whole time.”
He motions for me to get him paper and a pen.
“Give me a second,” I say, walking out to go find it.
“Alpha, you’re awake,” one of my nurses says.
“Yes, did I miss anything important?” I ask, looking around and finding a couple pieces of paper and a pen. “No. The injured have all been released, except for Alpha Waylon. However, the four mates who lost their loved ones are still here recovering.”
“But we didn’t lose any of them?” I ask.
“No, Alpha. We didn’t. Many of us think that’s because of you, your strength, and the love that you’ve shown us in such a short time. It might not mean anything to you, Alpha, but I think you’re doing a great job. Many others feel that way as well.”
“Thank you. That means a lot. How is my grandfather?”
“He’s awake. His wolf is healing him and I believe the doctor is planning to release him tomorrow.”
I nod. As soon as I finish talking to Benedict, I need to go see my grandfather. I killed his son and I need to make sure he is not only aware of that but also understands that I had no choice. He also needs to know that Lydia is dead.
When I get back to Benedict’s room, he writes quickly, then hands the paper back.
‘Bethany checking on pack. Dad heard about what mom did, going to kill her.’
I stare at the second sentence, then look up at Benedict. I’m not sorry that Beatrice is going to die. I would have killed her myself, except she’s Benedict’s mother.
“How do you feel about what your father is going to do?” I ask, handing the paper back to him.
He scribbles quickly.
‘She was warned. She came after you. I would kill her myself for that.’
I nod. “Alpha Felix isn’t dead, just so you know. He’s paralyzed and in my cells. His mate is pregnant and didn’t want to risk losing her pup, so he’s alive for now.”
I think through what I need to do next. Benedict writes then turns the page.
‘Tell me what you’re thinking.’
“Gabriel and Jack are in my cells because they were working with Kaelin. Now I know that his intention was to probably mark me himself until he realized I was his niece.”
He writes quickly again.
“They betrayed you and your pack.’
“Yes,” I say, looking at him. “I have to show that betrayal of that sort won’t be tolerated. They both need to die and it needs to be public.”
More scribbling.
‘Wait until I’m stronger and can stand with you, Sloane. You don’t need to do that alone.’
I smile. “You agree with my decision?”
He nods, then writes quickly.
‘As you said, the pack needs to see that betrayal like that can’t and won’t be tolerated.’
“There are others, others that I know were involved in letting Alpha Felix onto our pack lands.”
He writes and turns the paper to me again.
‘Weed them out now, Sloane. Bad blood like that only festers. Just look at my mother.’ I nod again. “Being an Alpha sucks,” I say, making him chuckle softly before nodding. “It’s a good thing I have you to help me manage all of this. You’re better at it than I am.”
He shakes his head, writing again.
‘You’re amazing. From everything I’ve heard, you’re proving to everyone that you deserve to be an Alpha, more so than many.
“Have you been seen by the doctor here? I wouldn’t want you to put your pup at risk by rejecting him before you have your baby.”
“It will weaken me and my wolf, but I can feel him, constantly trying to get into my head and I want him out. I want him out of my life, my mind, my body, all of it.”
“Alright, I need to go to the cells anyway. We can do that first,” I tell her.
“Thank you.”
We make our way to the cells. I take her hand in mind when I hear her heart rate beginning to spike. I know she’s not afraid of what will happen after the rejection, she’s afraid to face the man who has tormented her.
When we get to the cell, Felix’s eyes lock onto her.
“Abigail,” he says, around the feeding tube in his mouth. “What are you doing here,” he growls, although the sound is weak and lacks the normal vibration of a growl because of the feeding tube, or maybe it’s because of his paralysis.
I watch as Luna Abbie releases my hand and stands up straight, facing her mate.
“I’m here to show you that you didn’t win, Felix. You always made sure I knew my place and my purpose in your life. I was nothing more than a baby-making machine, someone for you to force yourself on, time and again. You are a disgusting excuse for a man, a wolf and a pathetic Alpha. And now you’re nothing. I never wanted you, but you forced your mark on me, just like you tried to let Milo force his mark on Alpha Sloane. That didn’t work out well for either of you, did it?”
“You fucking bitch! You’d be nothing without me.”
“I will be everything without you, Felix.”
“But I’m not dead, Abigail, so you’re stuck with me.”
“No, Felix, I’m not. I, Luna Abigail Downs, reject you, Alpha Felix Downs, as my mate and Alpha.”
I see her body flinch with the rejection. I reach out and put a hand on her back, wanting to give her strength, but not wanting to show that she’s weak in front of Felix.
“Fuck you,” he growls.
Aisling pushes forward and we release our aura into the cell. “ACCEPT IT,” she commands.
Felix’s mouth snaps shut and his eyes squint closed, as if he’s trying to keep the words from coming out. Aisling holds the force of her command over him as sweat begins to drip down his face.
“I,” he growls, fighting the command. “Alpha Felix Downs,” another snarl. “Accept your rejection.”
I catch Abbie as she collapses, clutching at her heart. I scoop her into my arms reaching out in the mind link to let the doctor know I’m bringing her in. When I look back into the cell, Felix is unconscious. I listen, making sure his heart is still beating, then I carry Abbie from the cells upstairs to the packhouse.
“It’s done. I’m finally free of him,” she says softly.
“Yes, you’re finally free.”
“What happened?” Scarlet asks, rushing up to me.
“She rejected Felix.”
She looks at Abbie. “Pack hospital?” she asks.
“Yes, and then I’d like you to join me downstairs. It’s time Gabriel and Jack learned their fate.”
She smiles her vicious Scarlet smile. “I can’t wait.”
