That evening, when Maggie finally got home after working overtime, she learned that Isabella had come to the Miller family home.

Isabella tugged lightly at Maggie’s sleeve and apologized in a small, careful voice, saying she’d lost the marriage certificate belonging to Maggie andi Franklin.

Maggie froze.

She hadn’t expected Isabella to actually lose their marriage certificate.

Pressing her lips together, she was about to say something, but when she looked down and saw Isabella’s clearly remorseful expression, the way she seemed afraid Maggie would get angry, Maggie took a deep breath. In the end, she didn’t scold her. She only said, “Since it’s already lost, then let it go. But from now on, without the family’s permission, don’t take important documents or valuables from home to school again. Understand?”

Seeing that Maggie wasn’t angry, the tension Isabella had been holding onto all day finally eased. She hugged Maggie and nodded obediently. “I understand. I promise, without you and Dad’s permission, I’ll never mess around like that again.”

“I know. I already told Dad, but he’s probably not off the plane yet. He hasn’t replied to me.”

A moment later, while Isabella was in the bathroom, Maggie’s phone buzzed.

It was a message from Franklin.

“Sorry.”

Maggie didn’t reply.

Soon, a second message came in from Franklin.

“I might not be able to come back for a while.”

Maggie saw it, but still didn’t reply.

The room was quiet.

After a short while, Franklin sent another message.

“I saw Isabella’s message. When I get back, we’ll find time to reapply for the documents.”

Maggie didn’t move.

Maybe realizing that she really was upset this time, Franklin sent yet another apology after those messages,

“Sorry.”

He was far away in France. He couldn’t come back to get the divorce certificate with her, and saying more now was pointless.

In the end, Maggie still didn’t reply with a single word.

Franklin didn’t send any more messages either.

Just then, the phone Isabella had set aside rang.

It was Franklin calling.

Isabella had just come out of the bathroom. Seeing Franklin’s name, she immediately brightened up, grabbing a paper towel to dry her hands as she turned on speaker and answered. “Dad, you’re in France already?”

Then he asked, “Did you properly apologize to your mom about the marriage certificate?”

“I did. If you don’t believe me, ask Mom.” With that, she handed the phone toward Maggie.

Maggie gently pushed it away. “You two talk. Your dad and I just talked.”

“Oh. Okay.”

On the other end, Franklin heard Maggie say they’d “just talked.” Despite Maggie not replying to his messages, he didn’t ask her about it. Instead, like Maggie had just done, he reminded Isabella not to touch things at home without the family’s permission.

Isabella readily agreed. “I know, Dad. You’re so naggy.”

After chatting with Isabella a bit more, Franklin hung up.

Before ending the call, though, he added, “Help Dad say good night to your mom too.”

Isabella looked at Maggie, who was sitting not far away, and said, “I’ve got it on speaker. Mom already heard.”

“Okay,” Franklin said.

The call between Franklin and Isabella ended.

But Maggie looked at Isabella and slowly lowered her eyes.

When Isabella had lost the marriage certificate and apologized to Maggie and Franklin, her attitude toward Maggie had been extremely cautious, afraid Maggie would be angry. But when facing Franklin, she wasn’t afraid at all-
