Isabella finally cheered up.
“So… I want to come over tomorrow and spend the holiday with you and Great–grandma,” she said.
“Okay.” Maggie said.
Of course Maggie was happy about that. “What do you want to eat? I’ll make it for you.”
sabella rattled off a whole string of dishes, and Maggie said yes to every single one.
They chatted for a little while longer before hanging up.
The next day.
Maggie was up bright and early, heading out with her uncle and aunt to do the grocery shopping.
By the time they got back and she and her aunt were busy cooking in the kitchen, they heard a car pull up outside.
Helen smiled. “That’s probably Isabella.”
Maggie nodded and dried her hands, stepping out of the kitchen.
he’d barely made it through the door when she spotted Franklin standing at the entrance, and she stopped short.
sabella came running over. “Mom, we’re here!”

“Ah.” Maggie nodded. “Okay.”

favorites?”
Maggie blinked and glanced over at Franklin, who was sitting perfectly at ease on the couch.
She and everyone else in the house had assumed he was just dropping Isabella off and would head out after a few minutes.
But from the way Isabella was talking…
Right then, Franklin looked over at her too.
Neither of them said a word, but one look was all it took. Maggie understood. Franklin actually intended to stay for Christmas Eve dinner.
She stood there for a second, not quite sure what to do.
