Chapter 575
n the Miller family’s eyes, Franklin was Isabella’s father, and on top of that, he’d been the one to track down a doctor for Sally when she was sick, which basically made him someone the whole family owed a debt to.
o everyone treated him well enough.
hat said, with Franklin there, dinner was still a little awkward. The kind of awkward that just kind of hangs in the air no matter how hard everyone tries.
Maggie barely said a word through the whole meal. Isabella, on the other hand, was having a great time, because Maggie had made a ton of her favorites.
s for Franklin, Maggie hadn’t known he was coming, but she still pulled through as a host and threw together a couple of his favorites on the fly.
le must have noticed. After he sat down, he looked at her and said, “Thank you.”
Of course,” Maggie said, keeping her voice neutral.
ason could tell Maggie wasn’t really in the mood to talk to Franklin, so he jumped in and steered the conversation somewhere else.
ranklin picked it up and started chatting with Jason.
few minutes in, just as the two of them were really getting into it, Maggie’s phone buzzed.
immy calling.
he hesitated for just a second, still processing, when she caught Franklin glancing over at her.
he didn’t look at him. She grabbed her phone, pushed back from the table, and told everyone, “I’ll go take this.”
he walked far enough away before she picked up. “Hello?”
immy’s voice came through warm and easy. “Merry Christmas.”
Merry Christmas,” she said.
You free later tonight? Want to go for a walk or something?”
he’d answered because she and Jimmy had history, but there was no way she was saying yes to that. “I’m spending time with my daughter tonight. Can’t get
way. Sorry.”
lot exactly a surprise.
mmy was quiet for a beat, but he didn’t push it. “Got it,” he said, easy as ever.
hen, “Have you eaten yet?”
I’m eating right now.”
Okay, I won’t keep you then. I’ll reach out later.”
he hung up and headed back to the dining room.
When she walked in, Franklin didn’t ask who called. He was still talking to Jason.
sabella, though, was all curiosity. “Mom, who was that?”
Maggie sat back down next to Franklin. “Just a friend.”

Chapter 575
“Oh,” Isabella said, and dropped it.
Maggie picked up her fork, ready to get back to her food, when her phone buzzed again.
She checked the screen. Glen.
She paused, then got up and stepped outside again.
“Merry Christmas,” Glen said, and then asked the exact same thing Jimmy had just asked. “Any plans tonight? Want to come hang out?”
I’ve already got plans tonight. Sorry.”
She said it, then it hit her that Glen’s whole family was overseas. He was probably spending the holiday alone. So she added, “Have you eaten?”
Yeah, out with some friends.”
ph, good…”
