But the moment the words left her mouth, Isabella pressed her lips together tight.

Aunt Sara was just about to say something when Isabella’s phone went off.

sabella glanced down. When she saw it was Maggie calling, she hesitated, reached for it, then turned her face away.

Aunt Sara caught every bit of that. It clicked immediately. whatever was eating at Isabella today, Maggie was at the center of it.

he’d watched how attached Isabella had gotten to Maggie lately. She didn’t know what had happened, but she had a feeling Isabella wouldn’t really be able to

et that call go to voicemail. She smiled to herself, decided not to say a word, and simply stood up. I’ll go downstairs and warm up some milk for you.

ince Aunt Sara was gone, Isabella stared at her stillringing phone. She knew if she didn’t pick up, it would hang up on its own.

he looked back at it. Reached out her hand.

and right at that moment, the call dropped.

sabella’s heart lurched. She sat there staring at the phone, wavering for a second, then couldn’t help herself. She picked it up.

he waited. Maggie didn’t call back.

sabella sat there pouting, phone held in both hands. Then, after a moment, she gave in and called Maggie back herself.

he line picked up almost right away. Isabella, you out of the shower?

feah. Maggie had answered, but Isabella still wasn’t in a great mood. Her voice was a little flat. Still, she asked, Mom, how come you only called the once and idn’t try again?

she hadn’t called back, would Maggie have justnot called again tonight?

figured you were in the shower, so I was going to give it a few minutes and try again after you were done. Then Maggie, genuinely confused, asked, What’s oing on? Why do you ask?

hat helped, a little. Nothing.Isabella said.

laggie didn’t push it. She moved on to why she’d called in the first place. Greatgrandma’s friend just got here from their hometown and brought a whole unch of local stuff with them. We’re going to cook some of it up tonight. You want to come?

abella’s mood was still a little off. Part of her didn’t feel like going. But the words came out before she could stop them. Yeah.

Great, I’ll have someone come pick you up in a bit?

abella pressed her lips together. Mom, can’t you come get me yourself?

omething in Isabella’s voice, the way it had been sitting low all through the call, hadn’t gone unnoticed. Maggie paused.

Okay, she said. 111 come get you.

hat helped more than a little.

sabella waited at home for over half an hour before Maggie finally pulled up.

ight around the same time. Franklin had just gotten home himself. He saw Maggie at the door and stopped short. You’re here.
