A mocking laugh escaped Lillian’s lips. “First you hit your son. Now you want to hit me. You really are something else.”
“You–shut your mouth!” Eleanor roared.
Lillian’s smirk didn’t fade. “All these years, how many times did you try to lay a hand on me? And how many times did you actually succeed?”
Eleanor stood there, seething, her jaw clenched so tight it looked like it might crack.
Julian said nothing either.
Hearing Lillian say “all these years” and “how many times” hit him like a fist to the chest.
He hadn’t known. He honestly hadn’t known the extent of what Eleanor had put Lillian through back then.
Stealing the gifts he’d given her–that was one thing. Humiliating, yes, but he’d thought that was the worst of it.
He never imagined there had been physical confrontations too. That Eleanor had actually tried to strike her. More than once.
No wonder she was so set on severing the bond now.
Suddenly, Julian understood. Even if Finn had never existed, Lillian still would have wanted
out.
Everyone in the Graves Pack had been against her from the start.
When they lived under the same roof, they’d torn her down with words and gone after her with their hands.
And after they moved out, they’d stripped her of every gift he’d ever given her.
Julian closed his eyes briefly.
Then he moved. He strode forward, grabbed Lillian’s wrist again, and practically guided her— forcefully–back into the car.

Just as he was about to walk around to the driver’s side. Eleanor blocked his path. “You see that? She has no respect for anyone. No respect for her elders. Is that really the kind of Omega you still want?”
Eleanor was livid
She’d always known that beneath Lillian’s delicate surface ran a stubborn, rebellious streak.
But she never expected Lillian to have the audacity to push Julian into showing up at Graves Estate like this. To cause this kind of scene.
Burning down the manor.
If he’d actually gone through with it, what would people have said about the Graves Pack? What would be left of their reputation?
Julian’s answer was quiet but firm. “Yes. I want her. I’ve always wanted her.”
“She’s nothing but trouble! Are you blind? Can you not see that?” Eleanor shot back.
Julian’s voice dropped, heavy with something that almost sounded like regret. “She wasn’t like this before.”
Eleanor went silent.
The air around them seemed to freeze.
She felt her vision blur at the edges from sheer rage. “What is that supposed to mean? Are you saying I’m the reason she turned out this way?
“Julian, I am your mother. Listen to yourself.”
In that moment, Eleanor was barely holding herself together.
And Julian’s defiance only added fuel to the fire of her hatred for Lillian.
“The Graves Pack is falling apart because of her! Iris can’t keep her wounds closed, the media won’t let this go, and after everything–after all of it–you still want her?
“What do you even see in her? Do you want her to make sure this pack never knows a single day of peace for the rest of its existence?”
Julian’s response was soft, almost as if he were speaking to himself. “She used to be so gentle.”
Eleanor could only stare, too furious to form words.

In the middle of her tirade. Julian had dropped that line like a stone into still water, then turned and gotten into the car.
He drove away with Lillian
The fire never got lit, but the confrontation alone was enough to make Eleanor’s knees buckle.
The moment the car disappeared from view, Graves Estate descended into chaos.
“Eleanor! Eleanor!”
“Someone call an ambulance–now!”
The head butler shouted orders, his voice strained with panic as servants scrambled to follow.
The air was thick with tension, and the sharp, acrid smell of gasoline Julian had left behind clung to everything like a bad omen.
Inside the car, Julian reached for Lillian’s hand.
She pulled away before he could touch her.
His fingers closed around nothing.
His chest felt the same way–empty, like something vital had been carved out of it.
“Back when we lived at the manor,” he said quietly, “did she try to hit you often?”
He was thinking back now. The year before their official bonding, they had stayed at Graves Estate. He’d been at the office most days.
When he came home at night, nothing ever seemed wrong.
As far as he’d known, the real tension between Lillian and the pack elders only started after she lost their first pup.
That was also when he’d decided to move them out.
But hearing her say “all these years” and “how many times” made him realize–behind the quiet evenings, behind the calm facade, how many things had happened while he wasn’t there?
How many times had Eleanor gone after her during the day while he was gone?
And he, Julian, had known nothing.

He’d thought the elders‘ hostility began after they moved out, because they were angry about him leaving.
Lillian was using a wet wipe, scrubbing her hand clean–the same hand that had grabbed Eleanor earlier. Over and over.
Her expression was blank, but the disgust in every motion was unmistakable.
When she didn’t answer, Julian pressed. “Why didn’t you tell me when those things happened?”
“Tell you?” Lillian let out a laugh, cold and hollow. “The whole pack lost its mind the second an outsider set foot on the territory. If I’d told you, you would’ve just taken their side and told me I was being difficult.”
Julian had nothing to say to that.
“You know,” she continued, her voice flat, “back then, you and I… we weren’t exactly close.”
“That’s-” The words stung. Julian felt his jaw tighten.
What did she mean, not close?
They were mates.
And now she was sitting here telling him they hadn’t been close back then?
This ungrateful she–wolf.
“Tell you?” Lillian laughed again, the sound sharp and bitter. “Didn’t I tell you how I felt about the Iris situation? Didn’t I say I wasn’t okay with it?”
Julian fell silent again.
The mere mention of Iris made the air in the car turn heavy.
Julian’s breathing grew uneven. “The Iris thing is over.”
“Over?”
The word dripped with disbelief.
“You haven’t forgotten what happened yesterday, have you?” Lillian shot him a look full of
scorn.
Hearing the mockery in her voice, Julian’s grip on the steering wheel tightened until his
