Over at Starfall Mountain, Chloe finally emerged from the bathroom, her hair still damp from the shower. She climbed into bed and found Lillian exactly where she’d left herthumbs moving across her phone screen, the familiar blocks of Tetris falling steadily.

Chloe raised an eyebrow. You really must be bored out of your mind if you’re playing that.

Lillian shrugged without looking up. It’s simple. Doesn’t take much brainpower.

She’d never been able to get into the complicated gamestoo much effort, too many buttons. Give her something mindless to pass the time, and she was happy.

Chloe hesitated, chewing on her lower lip. She hadn’t brought up Julian once since she’d arrived at Starfall Mountain. But the question had been sitting in her chest all night, and she couldn’t hold it in anymore.

So,she said carefully, did you actually poison Julian? The thing that put him in the hospital?

Victor had told her what happened at Laurel Manorthat Julian was admitted, that there was something in his system. It had thrown her completely.

Had Lillian really gone that far? Actual poison, just to break the mate bond?

Lillian finally looked up from her game. I fed it to him. But I wasn’t the one who put the poison in.

Chloe blinked. Come again?

What was that supposed to mean?

Lillian set her phone aside and rolled over to face her properly. Someone in the pack poisoned the oatmeal. I figured it out, so I justgave it to Julian instead.

Chloe stared at her.

For a solid five seconds, she couldn’t find words.

The Graves Pack is that desperate now?she finally managed.

Lillian let out a dry, humorless laugh. Desperate? Absolutely. Even the ones old enough to be someone’s grandmother are losing their minds in there.

Chloe shook her head slowly, still processing.

Lillian continued, her voice flat and matteroffact. Back in the day, they could push me around however they wanted. Take whatever they wanted, Now that they can’t bully me anymore and can’t take my stuff, of course they’ve lost it.”

Chloe let out a low whistle. Good for you. Let them lose it.

Whoever had actually slipped the poison inwhether it was Hilda, Eleanor, or one of the othersthey’d meant it for Lillian. They’d wanted her dead, or at least suffering.

Instead, Lillian had turned around and spoonfed the whole bowl to Julian herself.

And Julian

Just thinking about him made Chloe’s blood start heating up.

What kind of person even wants to be mated to someone like that?she burst out. Does he have absolutely no clue what’s going on? After everything, he still won’t let you go?

Lillian had been clear from the start. She wanted out.

Was the entire pack deaf? If they wanted Lillian gone so badly, they should be screaming at Julian, not ganging up on her like a pack of hyenas.

But no. They’d rather pick on the one they thought was weak.

I bet the pack is absolutely losing their minds right now,” Chloe said.

With Ethan dead, Julian was basically their only capable male heir. Their golden boy. And now he was in the hospital, poisoned, >ecause someone in their own house had tried to take out his mate.

They probably wanted Lillian’s head on a silver platter.

illian nodded, completely calm. Right now, they think I’m locked up. They’re still figuring out how to make me suffer in there.

Chloe’s eyes widened. What?

Iris texted me earlier.Lillian picked up her phone and scrolled idly. Told me Julian said he’s not bailing me out. He wants me to earn a lesson. Suffer a little.

That Alpha jerk. Her voice came out sharp. Wants you to suffer in lockup? That just proves you’re better off without him.

What was wrong with that man?

nstead of looking at his own packat the people who’d been tormenting Lillian for months, who’d tried to poison herhe wanted er to suffer? To learn a lesson?

le still expected her to cave? To come crawling back, begging for his protection?

Chloe threw her hands up. Running into a man like that is enough to make you lose your appetite for life.

illian said nothing.

No, reallywhat did you even see in him back then?

Chloe felt like steam might start pouring out of her ears. It was maddening.

Did he not see what Iris had done to her all these months? The constant jabs, the manipulations, the way she’d inserted herself into every corner of Lillian’s life?

And now he wanted Lillian to suffer?

Why didn’t he go suffer himself?

Unbelievable.

Chloe ranted for what felt like an hour.

Lillian, for her part, seemed almostused to it. She didn’t react much. Just lay there, letting Chloe vent, her expression unreadable.

But Chloe couldn’t let it go. Even after she’d exhausted herself, she lay in the dark, staring at the ceiling, tossing and turning.

Finally, she whispered, Hey. Do you think Julian really doesn’t see it? Or is he just pretending? I refuse to believe a man who’s run that pack for years can’t see through someone like Iris.

Lillian sighed beside her. Chloe. Aren’t you tired? Just go to sleep.

How can you sleep at a time like this?Chloe hissed, rolling onto her side. If I were you, I’d be going crazy trying to figure out how to break that bond.

One more day mated to an Alpha like that, and she’d lose her mind completely. She’d die of rage eventually.

Lillian’s voice came out of the dark, perfectly steady. Why should I go crazy? Let them be the crazy ones.

Right now, the whole pack was losing it.

And once she started taking back everything they’d stolen from her over the years, they’d lose it even more.

Chloe opened her mouth to argue-

But Lillian’s breathing had already evened out. She was asleep.

Chloe stared at the ceiling, dumbfounded.

She could actually sleep right now?

Huh. Well, good for her.

Lillian had it figured out, didn’t she? The ones who should be going crazy were the people in the Graves Pack. Her own head was perfectly clear.

She only unleashed the madness on them. It was likea job. When they were around, she brought the chaos. When they weren’t, she ate well and slept fine.

Calm on the inside. Crazy on the outsidebut only when it counted.

Chloe lay there for what felt like hours, her mind still racing, still turning over everything Lillian had said. Just as she was finally drifting off, her phone buzzed on the nightstand, yanking her back awake with a jolt.

She didn’t want to answer it.

But Lillian stirred beside her and kicked her lightly under the covers. Your phone.

Her voice was thick with sleepand genuinely annoyed.

Who the hell was calling in the middle of the night?

Grumbling, Chloe grabbed the phone and answered without even checking the screen. Hello?
