Eleanor’s voice was clipped. “Her shipments can’t get into the Western Continent anymore. And if the goods can’t move, she’s looking at massive penalties. They’re talking serious money.”
Hilda went quiet for a moment, processing that.
Massive penalties. Right.
She tilted her head, studying her mother’s tight expression. “So that’s why you talked to Iris the way you did back there? You’re worried she’ll try to funnel pack money to bail her mother out?”
Eleanor waved a hand dismissively. “The money’s the least of our problems.”
‘Then what’s the real problem?”
Eleanor pressed her lips together and didn’t answer right away.
Wasn’t it obvious? After everything that had happened in the past six months, didn’t Hilda have eyes?
‘Drop it,” Eleanor said finally, irritation bleeding into her voice. “I don’t want to talk about it.”
Bad enough that the pack’s luck with daughters–in–law had been a disaster. One after another, they’d brought nothing but headaches.
Especially that Lillian. From the day she’d mated into the pack, she’d never contributed a single thing. Not one damn thing.
When they reached Julian’s room, he was sitting up in bed, drinking water while Thomas arranged things on the bedside table. A hermos, some cups. The mundane motions of hospital life.
Eleanor didn’t bother hiding her bitterness.
‘You know,” she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm, “in normal families, when an Alpha ends up in the hospital, his mate is right here taking care of him. I told you that female was bad news, but you didn’t want to hear it. And now look–she actually tried to poison you.”
The mention of Lillian brought a fresh wave of resentment crashing through her.
Julian’s face went dark, but he said nothing.
Eleanor dropped into the chair beside his bed. She sat there for a long moment, chewing on her thoughts, before finally blurting out what had been sitting on her chest since she walked in. “So when are you going to break the mating bond?”
After everything that had happened, she couldn’t believe he’d still refuse.
If he did, she’d have to start wondering if Lillian had some kind of supernatural hold on him–some wolf trick, some old magic. How
else could she have twisted Julian around like this?
The moment the words left her mouth, Julian’s expression hardened into something cold. “Who said anything about breaking the
bond?”

Now that Lillian was locked up, he was starting trouble again–making sure no one in the family got a moment’s peace?
Julian shot back, “I don’t know about failing. But it’s the first time I’ve seen an elder try to steal from her son’s mate”
Eleanor sputtered, “I was only-”
“The Luna of the Graves Pack,” Julian cut in coldly, “behaving like that. It’s embarrassing”
“You–you-”
Face to face with her own son’s venom, Eleanor couldn’t find words.
Julian hung up.
Then he called Hilda.
His message was simple: for the next year, she wouldn’t see a single cent from the pack. All her credit cards were being cut if the could mooch off her parents, that was her problem–but from now on, every household expense in the pack would be strictly monitored.
Even if she tried to live off them, she probably wouldn’t get far.
Hilda didn’t sleep a wink that night. She lay awake, fuming, her blood boiling until dawn.
That night, everyone except Lillian had a restless, miserable time of it.
The next morning, Lillian woke up feeling completely refreshed.
Then she saw Chloe sitting up in bed, staring at her with the most resentful look imaginable.
The dark circles under Chloe’s eyes told the whole story.
Lillian blinked. “Trouble sleeping? New bed?”
She didn’t have that problem herself. No matter where she was, when she was tired, she hit the pillow and went out like a light.
Chloe’s voice came out in a flat, exhausted monotone. “You didn’t hear me on the phone last night?”
“Phone?” Lillian frowned. “You were on the phone?”
“You kicked me. You didn’t hear it vibrating?”
Lillian shrugged. “I forgot.”
Now that she thought about it, there had been some annoying buzzing. She’d kicked Chloe awake and gone right back to sleep, sinking into dreams without a second thought.
Chloe yawned so wide her jaw cracked. “I’m exhausted. That idiot Julian.”
“He called you?”
Chloe nodded, rubbing her eyes. “Yeah. When he found out you never went in yesterday, he kept demanding to know where you,

actually were
Lilian went quit.
Asking where she was.
And when he didn’t get an answer, he’d blame Finn again, wouldn’t he?
Typical
She picked up her phone and glanced at the screen. Dozens of missed calls from unknown numbers. They’d started around one in the morning and kept coming until about half an hour ago.
Probably all Julian.
Just as she was thinking that, her phone rang again. Victor’s name flashed on the screen.
Lillian answered, “Hello,”
‘It’s me.”
Julian’s voice came through the line.
Lillian stayed silent. Her lips pressed together, and she started to pull the phone away-
‘Where are you?” His voice stopped her.
