Chapter 147 Discovery
Third–Person POV:
On the other end of the line, Eleanor’s voice crackled with frantic anger.

The message beneath her words came through loud and clear–she genuinely believed the only reason Julian hadn’t secured James yet was because he simply wasn’t trying hard enough.
Julian’s face went dark with fury. “We have people en route right now. We’re doing everything
we can.”
Who did she think James was? Some hired hand you could snap your fingers and summon?
If getting him here was that easy, the stories about him wouldn’t all mention the same thing -the man was notoriously difficult. Impossible, even.
Eleanor forced herself to dial back the rage in her voice. “I’m just asking you to pay more attention to the pup. He’s your brother’s only son.”
She could feel Julian’s temper flaring through the phone, so she choked down her own.
Julian’s voice came back like ice water. “What do you want me to do, rip out my heart and hand it over?”
Eleanor sputtered. “That’s–that’s not what I meant. I just—”
“You want me to take my focus off my mate? Tell me, what exactly is the conflict here? Why can’t both exist at the same time?”
Eleanor’s hands were shaking now. “You-”
“Let me be clear. Not a single ounce of my attention is moving anywhere. If you think I’m not doing enough for the pup, then you step up and do more yourself.”
Eleanor fell silent. Completely.
Lillian sat in the passenger seat, listening to the whole thing unfold.
Right now, Julian sounded like a man pushed past his breaking point.
Anyone who came at him with criticism? He fired back. Didn’t matter if it was his own mother. Didn’t matter at all.
Eleanor was seething. “You’re going to put me in an early grave.”

Julian’s voice dropped even lower. “And let me make something else clear. I don’t care whether you like Lillian or not. That’s your business. But you will stop dragging her into everything.
“None of this–none of it–has anything to do with her.”
Eleanor opened her mouth. Nothing came out.
He’d lost it. Completely lost his mind.
Apparently, she couldn’t say a single word anymore without setting him off.
Fuming, Eleanor just hung up. There was no point talking to him now, especially not about anything even remotely connected to Lillian. Every accusation got thrown back tenfold, like she was the one always gunning for the girl.
Julian tossed his phone onto the console.
Listening to Eleanor’s attitude grow more blatant by the day, the full weight of everything Lillian had quietly endured finally crashed into him.
He reached out to pull her close.
But the second his hand touched her, he felt it–damp. Wet.
Julian’s breath caught. He looked down. Lillian’s face had gone pale, drained of all color.
He pulled his hand back. It was covered in… blood?
Where was it coming from?
His breathing turned ragged. “Lillian. Lillian, what’s wrong? You’re-”
Lillian’s forehead was slick with cold sweat. Her voice barely made it out. “Hospital. Take me to the hospital.”
The pain in her stomach was unbearable.
Julian’s heart slammed against his ribs. He gathered her into his arms and shouted at Thomas in the driver’s seat. “Get us to the nearest hospital. Now.”
Thomas scanned the GPS. “There’s a place called Gilneas City Medical Center about a mile from here.”
Turning back to the pack hospital where the pup was being treated would take them at least four miles.

Julian’s voice was almost a roar. “Then go. Go.”
Thomas didn’t hesitate. “On it.”
He punched the new destination into the navigation and hit the gas.

Julian held Lillian tight against his chest, his voice cracking. “What happened? Why are you bleeding again?”
Lillian couldn’t answer. She’d already slipped under.

The smell of antiseptic clawed at his senses.
Everything felt hollow. Distant.
After they’d rushed Lillian through those emergency doors, Julian’s mind had just… stopped. Empty. Nothing.
She was in the ER, and he was outside, frozen in place like someone had poured concrete around his feet.
Thomas came back after handling the paperwork at the front desk.
He wanted to walk over, say something. But one look at Julian’s face–the raw, terrifying energy rolling off him–kept Thomas planted where he was.
Julian’s phone buzzed. Again. And again.
Probably Eleanor. Or Iris.
He didn’t answer. Couldn’t move. Couldn’t think.
About an hour crawled by before they finally wheeled Lillian out. She was still out of it,
groggy.
The second Julian saw the doctor emerge, he lurched forward. “Is she okay? What happened?”
The doctor–a middle–aged Beta woman–pulled off her mask. Her eyes pinned Julian where he stood.
