Iris‘ voice cut through the air like ice. “My mate walked out on me, and right now my pup is barely holding onto life. And you’re telling me to stop crying? That I’m being impatient?”
She bit down on the word “impatient“, her tone laced with venom.
Eleanor’s heart stumbled. “That’s not what I meant. I just–you-”
Iris pushed forward, relentless. “You don’t give a damn that Ethan’s with Lillian, so why are you getting on my case?”
“That’s not Ethan. That’s Julian. Ethan is already”
“It is Ethan. My Ethan. He’s my mate!” Iris‘ voice slashed through Eleanor’s words before she could finish.
Eleanor stood there, stunned.
Iris‘ voice came out tight, forced through clenched teeth. “It was Julian who died. Not Ethan. Not my mate.”
Depression, right?
Who could really say whether something like that was real or just… convenient?
Eleanor’s pulse hammered harder. “I already told you. That’s Julian.”
Her tone hardened right along with her stance.
Iris stared at her, and the hatred pooling in her eyes turned cold as frost.
Hilda’s heart pounded against her ribs as the tension crackled between them. “Mom, please don’t-”
Eleanor snapped, “I said shut up!”
Hilda’s mouth clamped shut, the shout hitting her like a slap.
She wanted to ask what the hell was happening. Her mom had always been so good to Iris
before.
So why was she acting like this now?

The pup’s condition had taken a turn for the worse. The moment Julian and Lillian walked into the room, they found Iris with her eyes already red and swollen from crying.
Everyone froze when they saw Julian walk in with Lillian.
Hilda, still burning from finding out that Finn had personally picked Lillian up yesterday, had people digging into exactly where Lillian had been hiding.
She wanted to go there herself and tear Lillian apart.
But before any word came back, here Lillian was walking in with Julian.
Hilda’s eyes darkened.
She was back at Julian’s side?
Weren’t they constantly fighting about breaking the mate bond? What was this supposed to
mean?
Eleanor was surprised too, but mostly furious. “Why did you bring her again?”
She’d already been upset yesterday about Lillian not getting locked up.
Seeing her here now, in the flesh, was even worse.
Hilda, still raw from the humiliation at Livingston Group earlier today, hated Lillian down to her bones.
Lillian kept her hands buried in the pockets of her coat.
Under Eleanor’s venomous stare, she glanced casually at Julian.
A soft laugh escaped her. “Your mother’s asking why you brought me.”
That light laugh cut through the tense air like a knife.
Julian shot her a warning look. “Shut it.”
Lillian smirked. Then she turned to Eleanor. “Since your son won’t answer you, I will. He dragged me here. I didn’t exactly come willingly
Facing Lillian’s attitude now, Eleanor felt her temples pulse with rage.

Chapter 146 Obsession
“If he comes, you know she’ll come too.”
And Eleanor wanted nothing to do with Lillian. Not now. Not ever.
Hilda’s frustration boiled over. “Mom, would you stop?”
Wrapped around Lillian’s finger?
In Iris‘ head, Julian was Ethan. There was no difference.
Saying stuff like that now? It was like throwing kerosene on a fire.
Iris just stared at Eleanor, her eyes going colder and colder.
And finally, it clicked. She saw it now. Crystal clear.

Because of what happened with her mom, Eleanor’s whole attitude toward her had shifted.
Her mother wasn’t even in the ground yet, and Eleanor was already showing her true colors.
If the Hayes Pack really went under… would she end up treating Iris the same way she treated Lillian?
The two women stood locked in a silent war.
If Hilda hadn’t been wedged between them, playing peacemaker, they probably would’ve gone at each other right there.
Then the pup was out of the emergency room!
And things went bad fast. Christopher didn’t sugarcoat it–they needed James. No substitutes. No alternatives.
Eleanor was falling apart. On one side, the gut–wrenching terror of her grandchild slipping
away.
On the other, the constant need to watch Iris, to make sure she didn’t get any ideas about Julian.
The name James came up again, and Eleanor’s chest heaved. “There’s really no one else?” She already knew from Julian’s reaction that getting James here would be a nightmare.
His people had been combing the Western Continent, but so far? Nothing. No leads, no progress.
Christopher shook his head slowly. “In cases like this? James is the only one with five
