Eleanor’s voice trembled with barely restrained fury over the phone. “A mother lost her mate, and now she couldn’t even protect her own pup. What kind of empty words do you think will ever make that right?”

Julian shot back, his patience wearing thin, “Then what do you expect me to do?”

He was unraveling, too.

Ever since he’d learned about the pup’s death, nothing made sense anymore.

Iris‘ child was gone.

And he and Lillian had lost their pups as well.

These tragedies should have been separate, but now they were twisted together in one unbearable knot. Each person carried their own grief, their own rage.

“That vile woman belongs behind bars,” Eleanor spat into the receiver. “I’ve already called the police. I will make sure she pays for what she’s done. Julian, if you have any respect left for me as your mother, you will sever the mate bond with her.”

Julian stayed silent, his head throbbing.

As Eleanor continued to insist on sending Lillian to jail, he abruptly changed direction. Instead of heading to the office, he drove toward the hospital–but then, for reasons he couldn’t quite name, he turned the car around halfway and made his way to the company instead.

The moment he stepped inside, Thomas approached with a stack of documents. “Alpha, everyone’s already assembled in the conference room.”

Julian shrugged off his jacket and tossed it onto the sofa in his office. He didn’t proceed to the meeting. Instead, he walked to the floortoceiling windows, placed his hands on his hips, and stared out in tense silence.

Thomas lingered a few steps behind, unsure of his Alpha’s thoughts. But given what he knew, Julian was undoubtedly under immense strain because of Lillian.

Thomas was aware of the pup’s death as well.

Julian was trapped in an impossible position: on one side stood the Omega female he’d bonded with against all counsel, and on the other, the death of his late brother’s child.

“What would you do?” Julian asked abruptly, catching Thomas off guard.

“…”

How was he supposed to answer that?

“Say what you really think,” Julian pressed, his voice low.

It was clear–with everything crashing down at once, Julian’s mind was in turmoil. He needed an outside perspective, and Thomas was the closest thing to impartial he had.

But this was different.

This time, it was his brother’s pup who had died. Julian had cared about those twins–one falling ill had already weighed on him, and now the healthy one was gone, too.

When Thomas remained quiet, Julian turned and fixed him with an icy look. “Well?“.

“Right now… no matter what, you need to give Luna Iris some form of closure.”

Julian said nothing.

Thomas continued carefully, “I understand that Luna Lillian is important to you. But Luna Iris just lost her child. If she doesn’t receive some kind of resolution, she might completely break down. After all, for a shewolf, there’s nothing more sacred than her pup.”

The words hung heavily between them.

Julian’s chest tightened further. Yes, a pup meant everything to a female wolf. Even though Lillian’s pups had never been born, hadn’t she been raising hell these past weeks as if her world had ended?

“Luna Iris has likely already contacted the authorities,” Thomas added quietly.

The police.

The mention reminded Julian of how readily Lillian had called the cops at Laurel Manor without a second thought.

She was the one who’d gotten rid of the pup. The pup died because of her actions. And she’d had the nerve to involve the law? What did that say about her? Or had he spoiled her so thoroughly over these past two years that she now believed she could do anything without consequence?

Julian closed his eyes. “The police. Yes. The law…”

If she committed such an act, then she would have to face what came next.

Seeing Julian’s continued silence, Thomas ventured further. “Besides, if Luna Iris does call the police, it might… actually be for the best.

“Luna Lillian has been causing so much turmoil lately, she may have forgotten where her influence truly comes from…”
