Chapter 198 Carter’s Call
Chapter 198 Carter’s Call
Third–Person POV:
A cold smirk lifted the corner of Finn’s mouth. “You’re a lot sharper than Julian.”

The Langley Group had been hounding Julian relentlessly these days, and Julian kept pointing the finger at Finn. It never even occurred to him that Lillian herself had ties to the Langley Pack.
But Victor had turned the situation over in his mind from every angle and pieced it together.
Hearing Finn’s remark only solidified Victor’s suspicions.
He clicked his tongue. “Julian’s been too distracted lately–all that noise from Iris has messed with his head.”
Actually, scratch that. It wasn’t just Iris; the whole Graves Pack had been playing min with Julian.
Finn didn’t bother responding.
He’d never been interested in hearing about Iris anyway.
“Honestly, listening to Julian last night messed me up too,” Victor added.
If Julian hadn’t been rambling on like that, Victor wouldn’t have spent all night worrying that Iris might frame Lillian and land her behind bars.
Now, though, he didn’t have a thing to worry about.

Over at Starfall Mountain, Lillian wasn’t allowed to leave the property for now.
Edmund had given strict orders–no going out until her condition stabilized.
That morning, George came to update her.
“Miss, we’ve retrieved the bond dissolution papers. The attorney is taking them directly to City Hall to finalize the termination of your mating bond with Alpha Julian.”
Lillian gave a calm nod. “Good.”

She said it evenly, without a flicker of emotion.
Her and Julian… It was over.

Truth be told, it should have ended long ago. Julian was the one who kept refusing to let go.
Now, it was done.
And it was for the best.
That cage of a life, all those condescending looks from the Graves Pack as if they were doing her some huge favor–whoever wanted that could have it.
As for Iris, how much longer did she think she’d stay in Eleanor’s good graces?
That phony old Luna.
The moment Margaret completely fell apart over in the Western Continent, Iris‘ co days with the Graves Pack would be over, too.

Eleanor was like a magician with her act. The second Margaret latched onto some low–level official from the Draenei line, Eleanor turned sweet on Iris again.
“Buzz… buzz… buzz.”
Her phone vibrated on the table.
Lillian glanced at the screen. It was Violet from the old orphanage.
She picked up. “Violet.”
“Lillian, the orphanage is all sorted now. I can’t thank you enough.”
“Please, Violet. It was the least I could do.”
She’d grown up in that orphanage, after all.
And the trouble that hit the place this time… it had happened because of her.
Hearing that everything was settled lifted a small weight from Lillian’s chest.
“Do you remember Grandma Carter?” Violet asked.
“Grandma Carter? Of course I remember her.”

When Lillian first arrived at the orphanage, she cried almost nonstop. Carter was the one who would sit with her, patting her back until she calmed down.
But as the years passed, Carter grew older and eventually left the orphanage.
Why was Violet bringing her up now?
“She’s dying,” Violet said softly. “I went to see her earlier. We talked about you, and when she heard you’d mated with Julian from the Graves Pack… she said she wants to see you one last time.”
“Right now?”
The news hit Lillian like a punch to the chest.
“Yes, now. She always cared for you so much. Could you come? One last visit.”
“Okay. I’ll leave right away. Where is she?”
“I’ll text you the address.”
“Alright.”
After hanging up, Lillian still felt that dull ache in her chest. Thinking back, Carter couldn’t be more than ninety or so, could she?
Werewolves lived long lives–barring accidents, many saw centuries. For Carter to go so soon…
Once she ended the call, Lillian headed upstairs to change.
George noticed her preparing to go out and hovered nervously nearby.
“Alpha Edmund was clear–your health isn’t stable. You really shouldn’t be leaving.”
Lillian replied, “It’s fine. Now that Julian’s out of the picture, my health will be perfectly stable.”
Every previous time she’d seen Julian, he’d dragged her around without a second thought- taking her here and there, forcing her to the hospital whenever something happened with Iris. No wonder her condition had been so unsteady.
But now he wouldn’t be pulling her around anymore. She’d be more stable than ever.
