Lillian remarked casually. “And then there’s Marcus, right? He’s been at your mother’s side lately.”
Iris felt her pulse quicken again.
“What are you hinting at? Just say it already,” Iris pressed, growing restless.
“I’m not hinting at anything. Wasn’t it you who warned me your mother would come after me?” Lillian replied coolly. “Energy, time, attention… If she had even two of those to spare, fine.”
What she meant was clear: if Margaret returned from the Western Continent this time, she wouldn’t have nearly enough energy to focus on Lillian.
Iris retorted, “Stop talking nonsense. My mother isn’t the kind of person you think she is.”
“Ha!”
Faced with Iris‘ weak defense, Lillian didn’t bother arguing further. She only let out a dismissive laugh.
Afternoon tea was served soon after.
The aroma of pastries made Iris‘ mouth water once more.
“That damn Lillian,” she murmured. “I have to get out of here. With Lillian staying in Graves Estate, there is no way I could properly recover.”
Eleanor and Hilda had eaten at a restaurant in town and brought back takeout for Iris, who had already retreated upstairs.
Her attempt to intimidate Lillian had failed, leaving her even angrier as she stormed back to her room.
When Eleanor and Hilda returned, they found Lillian seated in the living room.
Eleanor shot her a glare. “Don’t you have anything better to do than sit out here? Why aren’t you in your room?”
After all, Lillian had taken over one of the bedrooms–why couldn’t she just stay there? Seeing her every time they passed through the living room was irritating.

Noticing the bags in Hilda’s hands, Lillian glance toward George, who understood immediately. He signaled with a slight nod, and two attendants stepped forward.
Without a word, the attendants approached Hilda.
Hilda instinctively stepped back. “What are you doing?”

They took the containers of food straight from her grasp. Eleanor reacted instantly, moving to intervene—but two more attendants swiftly held her back. Hilda’s takeout was carried directly to the kitchen.
“Have you lost your mind?!” Eleanor shouted at Lillian.
“Anything brought into this house must be inspected,” Lillian said calmly. “How do I know you haven’t brought something… harmful?”
The suspicion itself wasn’t unreasonable, but her manner was so severe it felt like a deliberate insult.
Not only was the takeout examined–Eleanor and Hilda’s personal bags were also thoroughly searched.
Eleanor had managed to calm down while they were out, but facing Lillian’s provocations now, she was so furious she felt lightheaded.
“Lillian, this is too much. This is my home. Do I need to go through security checkpoints just to walk inside?”
“It is your home, that’s true,” Lillian replied, a faint smile on her lips. “But given your history with me, I have to be careful, don’t I?”
She uttered the words “history” with deliberate lightness, which only made Eleanor and Hilda flush with humiliation.
Soon, the food was returned after inspection, handed back to Hilda.
“You’ve touched all of it. How are we supposed to eat this now?” Hilda protested.
Lillian shrugged. “Eat it if you want. Don’t if you won’t.”
Hilda fell silent, too angry to respond.
Eleanor was equally speechless.
Hearing Lillian’s tone, both women were seething, their anger simmering to the point of dizziness.

“Iris is still recovering from giving birth. What you’re doing is downright cruel,” Eleanor said, her voice trembling with rage.
Lillian paid no attention to her words.
Eleanor felt that if she kept getting this upset, she might genuinely give herself a heart attack. She wasn’t sure if she had any underlying heart condition, but lately, every burst of fury was accompanied by a sharp pain in her chest.
Waving weakly at Hilda, Eleanor muttered, “Just take it up to her.”
She didn’t know whether Lillian had tampered with the food or not, but Iris hadn’t eaten all day.
As Hilda headed upstairs, Eleanor took a moment to catch her breath. She was about to follow when her phone rang.
She answered sharply, “What is it?”
“Luna Eleanor, the Jade Heights estate is on fire.”
“What?”
Eleanor was stunned. Jade Heights on fire? “How Why would it just catch fire?”
No one had been living there. In fact, with Lillian causing so much trouble, Eleanor had been considering moving Iris to Jade Heights to recuperate.
And now it was burning?
“We’re not sure yet. The fire department is there, but the flames are intense. Everything inside will likely be lost.”
Eleanor went silent.
Lost.
