Chapter 68 Broken Vows
Third–Person POV:
Lillian recoiled from his touch, pulling her hand back sharply, without a shred of politeness.
Julian’s hand hung empty in the air, the palm feeling colder than before.

Lillian said, “The lawyer will send the dissolution agreement directly to your office. Sign it, and the grudge between me and Iris… will be settled.”
The word settled was spoken softly, half–true, half–false.
Yet hearing it, Julian felt a hollow ache open up inside his chest.
He didn’t respond to what she’d said. Instead, his tone came out vacant as he asked, “Was it really a pup?”
The doubt lacing his words plunged the hospital room into silence.
Lilliah turned her head to look at Julian.
She simply watched him in silence, not uttering a word.
And her silence only made Julian’s heart beat faster with panic…
Meeting her gaze made his chest tighten, but a moment later, he pressed on, “You shouldn’t overdo it with tonics during your cycle either.”
Lillian hadn’t known what to say to begin with.
Faced with this comment from Julian, she was left utterly speechless.
So even now, he still didn’t believe she’d been carrying a pup?
He thought it was just a heavy bleed from messing up her cycle with tonic herbs, didn’t he?
Her cycle…
Hah.
He remembered the dates of her cycle better than she did, didn’t he?
Seeing Lillian stay quiet, Julian tried to soothe her. “Alright, alright. It was a pup. I’m an ass. I shouldn’t have doubted you.”
He reached for her hand again.
“I understand how much you wanted a pup, but the monthly check–ups never missed anything, so…”
So what?
Julian didn’t finish. His point was clear–if she’d really been pregnant, the monthly exams would have caught it.
And he was utterly confident that if Lillian had been carrying a pup, he would never have let anything happen to it.

He spoke words that sounded halfway like belief, then reminded her of the regular check–ups scheduled every month.
Lillian’s disgust deepened. She pulled her hand back once more.
Feeling her hand slip away again and again left Julian’s heart feeling emptier each time…
Lillian said, “Let’s dissolve the bond. There’s nothing left for us to say.”
Faced with this version of Julian, Lillian felt there truly was nothing more to discuss.
Hearing the words dissolve the bond, Julian’s expression darkened.
What had happened to Lillian today had left him deeply unsettled inside.
Right now, facing Lillian, he was forcing down his own fury.
After she’d said dissolve the bond, Lillian simply stared at him, cold and detached.
At this moment…

All the passion and tenderness they’d once shared seemed to vanish in an instant.
Julian stood up.

He turned and walked to the door. Without looking back, one hand trembled as it gripped the handle. “Do you remember the vows from our bonding day?
“As long as the sun and moon do not fall, you and I will not part.‘ I told you, no matter what happens, I would never let go of your
hand.”
Their bonding day…
So many people had doubted them.
Even their bonding ceremony hadn’t been blessed by family, yet every word Julian had spoken during the rites had been firm and resonant.
Hearing him bring up the vows from their bonding day, Lillian closed her eyes, hiding the surge of emotion that flashed through them.
“You also said you would protect me, that I shouldn’t be afraid. You said you wouldn’t let me suffer the slightest grievance.”
Compared to Julian’s tense, anger–suppressed revisit of the past, Lillian recounted the words he’d spoken that day with utter calm, precision down to every syllable.
Hearing her recite his final vow without missing a word, Julian’s broad back stiffened.
Lillian continued, “Forget grievances for now. But did you protect me? Did you?”
Protect her? Did he?
No…
Lillian lifted her gaze to the man’s rigid back. “Do you remember what you said two hours ago, when Helen called you?”

Julian couldn’t answer. His breathing grew strangled.
Lillian went on, “You said, ‘Did she put you up to calling me and saying this?‘
“Julian, bringing up the vows from our bonding day? ‘As long as the sun and moon do not fall, you and I will not part.‘
“Don’t you find yourself ridiculous? I almost died at Inkwood Gardens today…”
She didn’t finish.
But Julian’s breathing grew increasingly ragged.

In Margaret’s hospital room, Iris sat in her wheelchair. Upon learning Margaret was injured, she’d frantically had someone bring her here.
Seeing her mother lying injured in bed, unable to move, Iris‘ eyes burned with furious hatred.
“Damn Lillian. How dare she? Why would Finn help her?”
Hearing that Finn’s people had done this to her mother for Lillian’s sake, Iris‘ gaze turned vicious.
Margaret watched the tears streaming down her daughter’s face. Her eyes sharpened, and she snapped with stern severity, “Wipe those tears away.”
Her face was tightly wrapped in bandages. Speaking pulled at her wounds, making Margaret hiss in immediate pain.
Iris flinched at the shout.
But seeing Margaret in such pain, her tears fell even harder.
“Mom…”
Margaret hissed, “Save your tears. Go cry in front of the person you want most.”
In that moment, Margaret’s voice carried a ruthless edge, her eyes glinting with murderous intent.
Iris wanted to say more, but seeing the cold light flashing in Margaret’s eyes, she could only force her tears back.
