“Then I’m afraid I can’t help you.” She looked past him, already scanning the lobby for the next person worth acknowledging.” Without an appointment, there’s nothing I can do.”
“I understand. But if I could just speak with someone from-
“Sir.” Jessica’s voice sharpened, a clear note of irritation cutting through the professional veneer. “Do you know what building you’re in? This is Imperial Group. One of the largest companies in the world. We don’t take walk ins.” She looked him up and down again, slower this time, making sure he noticed. “Are you sure you’re not looking for the employment office? It’s on Third Street. Two blocks east.”
This is how they treat people who don’t look rich enough. Interesting.
Tyler leaned back in his chair, making no effort to hide his amusement. “Maybe he’s looking for the mailroom. We get that sometimes. People walk in thinking they can just hand someone their resume and get hired on the spot.”
“Is that what this is?” Jessica turned back to Logan with an expression that was one degree away from open mockery. “Are you here to apply for a job? Because the hiring process goes through our online portal. We don’t accept walk in applications.”
Logan remained perfectly still. “I’m not here to apply for a job.”
“Then what exactly are you here for?” Jessica leaned forward on her elbows, her patience visibly thinning. “Because right now, you’re taking up space at my counter while actual clients are waiting.”
A man in an expensive charcoal suit who had arrived after Logan stepped up to the counter beside him. Jessica’s entire demeanor transformed in an instant. The cold expression melted. The warm smile returned. She practically glowed.
“Mr. Rivera! So good to see you again! Your meeting is confirmed for eleven thirty on the twenty second floor. Let me get your guest badge ready.”
She processed Mr. Rivera’s badge in under thirty seconds, offered him a bottle of water from the mini fridge behind the counter, and wished him a wonderful day with the enthusiasm of a woman greeting a personal friend.
Then she turned back to Logan.
The smile vanished.
“You’re still here.” It wasn’t a question.
“I would appreciate it if you could-”
“Look.” Jessica’s voice dropped to something between a whisper and a hiss, pitched low enough that the nearby clients wouldn’t hear but loud enough that every employee behind the counter could. “I don’t know who you are or what you want, but this isn’t the kind of place where random people walk in off the street and demand attention. We deal with executives, investors, and people who actually matter. If you don’t have an appointment, a badge, or a reason that I can verify, then you need to leave.” She slid a visitor form across the counter, the cheap kind printed on thin paper, the kind Logan recognized as the forms used for delivery workers and temporary maintenance staff.
“If you’re here for some kind of service call, fill this out and wait over there.” She pointed with one manicured finger toward a cluster of plastic chairs near the service entrance, wedged between a water cooler and a stack of cardboard boxes. “Someone from facilities will get to you when they have time.”
Tyler snorted. “If they have time.”
