Chapter 89 The Setup
Lillian’s POV:
Finally alone.
I glanced toward the window. Margaret was probably still stuck in the hospital, which explained why Julian hadn’t posted any guards outside for me.
With Helen gone, I was the only person left in Inkwood Gardens.
I pulled out my phone and dialed George. He picked up after half a ring. “Miss.”
“You clear?”
George’s voice was steady. “I’m clear. Handling the cleanup now.”
I raised an eyebrow at that. “What happened?”
“There was a guy…”
He didn’t finish the sentence.

But I understood. I didn’t push. George had spent years at Edmund’s side. I had no doubt he’d dealt with situations like this more times than he could count.
I just said calmly, “Come get me at Inkwood Gardens when you’re done.”
“On my way.”
I hung up.
I was about to stand when my phone buzzed. I picked it up.
A text from an unknown number.
But the content made it obvious who sent it. Just one line. “Stay away from Finn. I’ll give everything back. Including Inkwood Gardens.”
Inkwood Gardens.
Nothing summed up the irony better than that.
This house–mine and Julian’s marital home–was in Hilda’s name. All these years, we’d been

living in a property that belonged to his sister.
Julian never seemed to care. Hilda was his blood, after all.
But now Hilda was lumping Finn together with Inkwood Gardens, trying to get under

skin.
1 arched an eyebrow, stood up, and headed for the storage closet.
That was where they kept the gasoline for the lawnmower.
Third–Person POV:
After Helen left Inkwood Gardens, a knot formed in her stomach. Something felt wrong.
She tried calling Julian to tell him about Lillian’s strange behavior, but the calls wouldn’t go through.
Frustrated, she hurried through the supermarket aisles, grabbed the strawberry jam as fast as she could, and rushed back.
Meanwhile, Julian was en route to the hospital. He thought for a moment, then dialed Finn.
This time, Finn actually picked up.
Julian didn’t waste words. “She won’t be coming into work for a while. She needs to rest at home and focus on getting her body ready for a pregnancy.”
He put extra weight on the word “pregnancy“.
On the other end of the line, Finn heard Julian say that word so calmly.
The usually stoic, unreadable Alpha actually let out a quiet laugh. “You think she’d still have pups for you?”
“She’s my mate. Who else would she have them for?”
Julian’s voice came through gritted teeth. He was already at his limit with Finn’s involvement in his and Lillian’s life.
This was his way of pushing Finn out. Of drawing a line.
Finn’s response was measured. “You’re going to sever the mate bond.”
Those words hit Julian like a punch to the gut.

Hearing someone talk about him and Lillian severing the bond was one thing. But hearing Finn say it like that–like it was inevitable, like it was already decided?
What was he planning? If Julian didn’t let go, was Finn going to make him?
In his office downtown, Finn sat behind his desk in a charcoal suit and silver–gray tic, his presence filling the room without effort.
His sharp features, framed by gold–rimmed glasses, held their usual cold authority. Impenetrable. Unreadable.
He listened to the fury in Julian’s voice and said simply, “Yelling at me won’t change anything.
“The longer you drag this out, the worse it gets for you. Better to end it now.”
Julian’s voice cracked through the phone. “Finn!”
The rage boiling in his chest was about to make him explode. Before he could get another word out, Finn hung up.
The line went dead.
Paul knocked and entered immediately after.
“Alpha.”
Finn took a slow drag from the cigarette burning between his fingers. “What?”
“Our people spotted Lillian at Inkwood Gardens. But George showed up too.”
At the mention of George, Finn said, “Pull our people back.”
