Lillian’s voice came through the line, light and unconcerned. “Me? I’m sitting in a restaurant having soup. I bet no one in your precious Graves Pack can eat a thing right now, can they?”

The comment landed exactly where she’d aimed it.

Iris hadn’t kept down a real meal since delivering the pup.

Julian’s grip on the phone tightened until his knuckles went white. “Which restaurant?”

Lillian said, “None of your business.”

Julian’s jaw clenched. “Did Finn set it up?”

The name hung in the air between them.

Lillian went quiet for a beat. “If you’re determined to drag Finn into this, I can’t stop you.”

Explain?

What was the point? Julian wouldn’t believe her anyway. He’d believe whatever Iris told him. She’d already tried to explain the Finn situation once. He hadn’t wanted to hear it then.

“Lillian, the mate bond isn’t dissolved yet.”

Her evasiveness only pushed him further into fury.

He wanted to remind her she was still his–but her response was to hang up on him.

When word spread about Inkwood Gardens, Victor and Liam both showed up fast.

Victor took one look at the charred remains and felt his stomach drop. “She really wants out of this bond, doesn’t she?”

Julian was already wound tight.

Victor’s comment nearly pushed him over the edge.

He shot Victor a look cold enough to freeze water, and Victor actually flinched. “What?”

Honestly, Victor had a point.

Those two years before, no matter how upset Lillian got, she hadn’t actually lived with the pack.

Back when Ethan was still around, even if Iris caused problems, how much damage could she really do?

If Lillian got tense during pack dinners at the mansion, she could leave afterward and let it go. Julian could always make it right later.

No wonder Julian couldn’t fix things now.

The last couple of days alone–every time he’d tried to reach out to Lillian, either Iris needed something or the newborn pup had some issue.

And now that he thought about it, Iris had called him right before he left Inkwood Gardens that morning.

Maybe Lillian burning the house wasn’t calculated. Maybe it was just pure rage.

What Julian didn’t know was that the fire had actually been triggered by Hilda–by something she’d said, something that finally pushed Lillian past her limit.

Victor sighed. “If you ask me, just let her go. Being in this pack is a nightmare. Everyone here is impossible.”

The temperature dropped about ten degrees.

They might have underestimated how Julian actually felt about Lillian.
