Aella stood at the door and watched as Daniel shut down the young doctor who had been trying to flirt with him. His tone was firm enough that Aella shrank back a little.

Daniel was usually gentle and polite. He never acted like a boss with his colleagues.

She had no idea he could be this sharp.

Sophia kept sneaking glances at Aella. Without warning, she asked, “Dr. Reid, do you who my dear Daniel’s fiancée is?”

Aella met Sophia’s sly eyes and shook her head while waving her hands.

Why did every member of the Hills stare so directly at people? Daniel did it. Aurelia did it. Now Sophia did it too.

When Vinnic stepped out of Daniel’s office, Sophia tugged Aella back a few steps.

Vinnic spotted Sophia and instantly switched her expression. “Mrs. Hill.”

Sophia handed her a tissue. “Dr. Walsh, what happened?”

Vinnie didn’t hide anything.

“Mrs. Hill, the elders from both families wanted to match me with Daniel. I tried to get closer to him. Forget that he rejected me, he even fired me now.”

Sophia held Vinnie’s hand and spoke seriously.

“You, of all people… You’re pretty, well–off, educated. You’d be better off with a mule than with our Daniel.”

Vinnie blinked.

Aella stared too.

Sophia continued, “Don’t be fooled by Daniel’s looks. He is not a good choice. He’s so old and has never had a single woman in his life. Think about that. Really think.”

A few sentences were enough to make Vinnie freeze.

Did Daniel have some kind of medical issue? Was he not capable in that way?

Or was he a gentleman on the surface but a complete psycho inside?

Her thoughts swirled until her gaze suddenly landed on Aella. “Dr. Reid, why are you here?”

Aella was Daniel’s junior from training. He had helped with her transfer and her full–time post. Warren was the board director of Westside Hospital, so even if others didn’t know, Vinnie certainly did.

Could Daniel’s so–called fiancée be Aella?

Sophia didn’t let Aella speak first. “I brought Dr. Reid to have Daniel to do some check me. Any problem with that, Dr. Walsh?”

Vinnie immediately forced a smile. “Sorry, Mrs. Hill. I was just asking.”

Sophia told Aella, “My time is precious. Get inside and set things up.”

Aella hurried into the office.

Seeing how poorly Sophia treated Aella, the last bit of suspicion in Vinnie vanished. She left with a confused look.

Sophia waited until Vinnie was completely gone before looking into the office through the door crack.

After a while, she saw nothing but the two of them talking about work, then going back to their tasks. Sophia let out a disappointed sigh.

Aella stood when Sophia entered. “Mrs. Hill, please have a seat.”

Sophia set her hand on Aella’s wrist and studied her face with growing satisfaction.

Aella checked her pulse carefully. The rhythm was steady and calm. Very healthy.

Aella stood and said, “Mrs. Hill, you’re in great health. If you’re having trouble sleeping, try cutting out strong tea and coffee four hours before bed.”

Sophia said, “If you’re free this weekend, come by the Hill Estate.”

Aella glanced nervously at Daniel and refused right away. “I’m sorry, Mrs. Hill. I already have plans this weekend.”

She found the nearest excuse and slipped out of Daniel’s office.

Once the door closed, Sophia dropped the act.

She pointed at Daniel with a look of disgust. “Look at you. You’re not as smart as Lysander,

Later, close to the end of the workday, Daniel came looking for Aella.

She glanced down both ends of the hallway and quickly shut her office door.

Aella said, “Daniel, this is a hospital. Don’t keep showing up here like this.

Daniel said, “I just came to ask if you’ve thought it over.”

Aella blinked. “Thought what over?”

Daniel said, “About what happened that night.”

Aella reacted on instinct and clapped a hand over his mouth.

Daniel’s lips curved as he watched her panic.

He lowered her hand and took it in his. “I reserved a restaurant for tonight. We need to talk.”

“See you there,” Aella said, snatching her hand back.

A little after seven, Tyrone and Brad arrived at a high–end restaurant downtown.

They walked through the glass doors and immediately saw Daniel and Aella.

Inside, Aella asked Daniel what he wanted to eat. Daniel said, “Order whatever you like. You don’t have to adjust to me.”
