The Hills even reminded him to bring their daughter along.

Aella propped both elbows on the edge of the table, chin cupped in her hands. “Well, they messed with me first.”

Back at the Christmas market, she’d only tossed out one casual complaint–she hadn’t expected Tyrone to take action that fast.

He’d said he’d get revenge for her, and then actually gone and done it.

From last night until now, gossip about Zera and her mother–and about the Cunninghams and the Hills–had flooded every corner of Vleka.

Warren and Miriam traded a look.

They knew Zera was scheming against Tyrone, but had no idea when their own daughter had been dragged into the mess.

Warren stood and headed for the study, deciding to call Tyrone to ask what was going on.

Over on Tyrone’s side, he’d also received an invitation from the Hills.

Virginia asked Tyrone what he planned to do.

Tyrone said that if Aella went, he’d go. If she didn’t go, neither would he.

Tyrone couldn’t help glancing at Aella. He told Miriam, “This isn’t on her. The other side picked the fight.”

Warren said, “Since this whole mess involves Aella, we need to go over there and clear the air.”

But he still reminded Tyrone, “Tyrone, you’re about to take over Winter Group. Since the Hills are the ones reaching out to make peace, we should go and avoid creating unnecessary enemies.”

Tyrone’s tone stayed firm. “Warren, that depends on whether Aella’s willing to forgive them

or not.”

Aella shot to her feet.

“If people don’t mess with me, I don’t mess with them. But that Zera is fake and manipulative, always popping up like some clinging ghost to pick fights with me. In front of a whole crowd, she straight–up lied and blamed that broken lantern on me–someone that vicious does not deserve forgiveness.”

Miriam hushed her daughter in a low voice. “Aella, you can’t only think about yourself.”

Tyrone had stuck his neck out for their daughter and was willing to offend both the Cunninghams and the Hills for her.

There was no way they could just sit back and watch Tyrone end up at odds with two of Vleka’s most powerful families because of their daughter.

Miriam tugged her daughter closer and leaned in, whispering, “The Hills and the Cunninghams both carry serious weight in this city. Tyrone’s going to inherit the company someday. Too many enemies are bad for him.”

Aella glanced back at Tyrone.

Honestly, that angle hadn’t even crossed her mind.

But if backing down was better for Tyrone, then she could bend, too.

Aella said, “Fine, I’ll listen to Mom.”

Warren nodded. “Mrs. Winter is right. Since the lills are the ones coming to make peace, we should give them that courtesy. It’s the ability to bend and stretch that allows you to accomplish great things.”

Tyrone hesitated for a moment, then made up his mind. “If the Hills show enough sincerity, there’s no harm in meeting once.”

Just then, Tyrone’s phone started to ring.

He got up to take the call outside, and Aella, bored, trailed after him.

Watching their daughter go, Warren and Miriam could only shake their heads, exasperated and fond all at once.

Virginia watched the two kids‘ backs disappear down the hall, feeling more and more satisfied the longer she looked.

Smiling, she turned to Aella’s parents. “There’s one more thing I wanted to talk over with you two today.”

Miriam had always been close to Virginia. “What’s there to talk over? You know you’re family here.”

Virginia said, “Tyrone and Aella grew up together. I’m very fond of her, and now that her coming–of–age has passed, I was hoping to have them get engaged. I wanted to hear what you both thought.”

Miriam glanced at her husband; they were both very tempted to say yes.

But their daughter had only just become an adult.

As parents, they didn’t want her rushing into marriage too young.

Miriam said, “If those two really do end up together, of course, we’d be happy. We just want to know where Tyrone himself stands.”

Virginia quickly put their minds at ease. “The engagement idea actually came from Tyrone. I can tell he really loves Aella.”

Virginia added, “My son’s quiet and closed off. I was afraid you might not think much of him, so I wanted to sound you out first.”
