Virginia rose to her feet, satisfied. “Since both families are on the same page, let’s leave it at that for now–once Aella finishes her exams, as long as she says yes, we’ll arrange their engagement.”
Out in the yard, Aella was chatting with Tyrone when she saw her parents and Virginia walk out, all three wearing bright, happy smiles.
Aella hurried over. “Mom, what’s got you so happy?”
Miriam didn’t answer, just walked Virginia all the way to the door.
Ten minutes later, Tyrone’s car merged onto the express lane.
He glanced at the rearview mirror and caught the way his mother couldn’t stop smiling, and finally asked, “Mom, did Dad agree to the divorce?”
Virginia teased him on purpose. “I just asked for you–Aella’s parents think you’re too cold, too quiet, and terrible at taking care of people. They say Brad suits her better and turned down the idea of you two getting engaged.”
Tyrone was silent.
Watching her son’s hands tighten around the steering wheel, Virginia almost laughed.
Virginia said, “This is perfect. From now on, it’ll just be your grandpa, your dad, and you at the Winters–three lonely bachelors muddling along together.”
Tyrone stayed in a low mood the whole drive and finally pulled up in front of the McCarthy Residence.
Seeing how out of it her son was, Virginia unbuckled her seat belt slowly. “I wasn’t finished earlier.”
Tyrone turned his head toward her, saying nothing.
“Aella’s parents never said they were against it,” Virginia added.
The tension in Tyrone’s shoulders visibly eased.
Virginia continued, “Warren already agreed. Once Aella’s exams are over in a few months, as long as she says yes, we’ll sit down together and make the engagement official.”
Watching the way his mouth couldn’t help curving up, Virginia climbed out of the car with a smile.

Back at the Winter Estate. Tyrone opened the safe and took out a large raw pink diamond.
He immediately contacted a world–famous jeweler overseas and commissioned a custom engagement ring.
Just thinking that in a few months he could be officially engaged to Aella–and stay by her side without holding back–made his heart pound.
Two days later.
At 7 p.m., the Hills hosted a dinner at a hotel for the Winters and the Reids, with the Cunninghams and Deacon joining as well.
Because Ralph was out of the country, only Virginia and Tyrone attended on behalf of the Winters.
The Reids were Aella and her parents.
George came alone.
Deacon from Hill Pharmaceuticals arrived with his daughter, Vinnie.
From the Hills, Thomas and his wife came, along with Michael and Zera.
Aella followed her parents into the private dining room.
Tyrone stood up first, pulling out chairs for Aella and her parents.
Aella naturally took the seat right next to him.
Seeing how attentive Tyrone was to the Reids, everyone else at the table reacted in their own
way.
Zera and Vinnie sat side by side.
Vinnie shot Aella a vicious glare and whispered to Zera, “Didn’t you tell me that little bitch
Aella broke you and Tyrone up? Because from where I’m sitting, he seems awfully nice to her family.”
Under the table, Zera’s hands twisted together so hard her knuckles ached, and jealous flashed across her eyes when she looked at Aella.
She had dated Tyrone for two whole months, and he had never once taken the initiative with her like this.
But it was fine–she’d already done her homework.

The Reids might be wealthy, but compared to the Hills, they weren’t even in the same league. That little bitch, Aella, was nowhere near good enough for a successor like Tyrone.
Her grandmother had already promised her this much.
Once the scandal about her and her biological mother died down-
And once her case was officially closed, they’d find a way to arrange an engagement between her and Tyrone.
Sooner or later, Tyrone would be hers.
After a round of polite small talk, the elders all took their seats.
The servers began bringing out the dishes.
Tyrone sat quietly in his chair, eyes lowered as he absently played with the metal chain on Aella’s purse.
George was the first to raise his glass. “Mrs. Winter, Mr. Hill, Mr. Reid, Mr. Walsh–there’s no need to hold on to grudges. We shouldn’t let a minor spat between the kids ruin the peace between our families. I suggest we all drink together, have Ms. Caldwell and Ms. Walsh apologize to Ms. Reid, and let this matter end here. What do you say?”
Thomas lifted his own glass. “Mr. Cunningham is right. This incident rests with the Hills. I failed to keep a tight rein on the younger generation, and Ms. Reid was wronged because of it. I’ll drink first to offer my apology.”
Once Thomas downed his glass, it would have been rude for the Winters and Reids not to follow.
Virginia noticed Thomas standing there with an empty glass in hand while Zera sat comfortably in her seat, and the disdain on her face was impossible to miss.
Trash like that.
Whoever gets tied to her is cursed.
While Virginia was silently judging, Miriam was sizing Zera up as well.
From head to toe, Zera was wrapped in designer labels, her makeup flawless and sharp.
But in looks, in figure, in the way she spoke and carried herself, she couldn’t hold a candle to her daughter.
Most importantly, this “Ms. Hill” didn’t have even a trace of the quiet confidence and ease a

Nor did she have the grounded dignity of a kid from a regular, hardworking family.
Instead, something about her felt flighty all the way down to the bone.
Miriam couldn’t help but shake her head.

Lilian, on the other hand, was watching Aella–her stunning smile, the way she sat down casually yet kept her back straight, shoulders relaxed, and hands resting naturally at her sides.
