Chapter 14
A nonchalant, enigmatic smile touched Serena’s lips. “We’ll know once we check.”

She began opening crate after crate of liquor, instructing Yolanda to do the same. She sampled a tiny amount from each different type.
Not far away, a sports car was parked by the curb. The man inside, seeing Serena hauling crates in what looked like a storage area, did a double–take.
He quickly pulled out his phone, recorded a short video, and sent it to Dylan.
Dylan was just preparing to leave the office when he saw the message from his friend.
Before he could watch the video, a text followed: [Dylan, you’re heartless. After the divorce, your ex–wife is reduced to working in the bar’s storage room?]
Watching the video of Serena straining to lift a crate, a complex, uncomfortable feeling settled in Dylan’s chest.
He couldn’t help but wonder, ‘She’s just recovering from a serious injury. Why isn’t she taking care of herself? I’ve given her a substantial sum. She shouldn’t need to do manual labor.’
Dylan quickly called his friend. “Where are you?”
“Kismet Bar. Coming for a drink?” The voice on the other end was languid and teasing.
Thinking of Stella, Dylan replied, “Yes. I’m on my way.”
Just as Dylan was about to leave, Eliana appeared. “Dylan, what’s been going on with you lately? You haven’t been home. The baby misses you.”
Eliana was dressed in a white dress, her hair cascading over her shoulders. Her makeup was delicate and sparkling, and she offered him a soft, sweet smile, looking utterly docile and gentle.
She had dared not show her face around Dylan these past few weeks.
Pierre’s actions had been uncovered, but she knew he wouldn’t betray her.
Still, fearing Dylan’s suspicion, she had kept her distance.
Dylan studied her deeply, his gaze softening as he remembered her supposed liver donation. “I’ve been very busy lately. I’ll make time to come see you both soon.”
His words made Eliana pout with a pitiful look. She bit her lower lip slightly, her eyes reddening at the corners. “I heard about Pierre.
“I can’t believe a few casual complaints from me led him to misunderstand…
“Dylan, Pierre worked for the Ashfords for twenty years. If not for merit, at least for his years of service. Please, help him. Get him out.”
Dylan hadn’t expected her to say that. “Eliana, Stella almost died. We were wrong about her.
“Pierre took it upon himself to try to kill her. At his age, doing such a thing and claiming I ordered it? That was meant to drag me down with him.

“Don’t you understand the consequences of what he did?”

Eliana hadn’t expected the old fool to be so useless. Nor had she anticipated Dylan being at the scene and saving Stella.
And Stella’s damnable luck to survive truly stunned her.
A flash of killing intent passed through Eliana’s eyes, perfectly masked. “Dylan, are you off work? Let’s go home together. Our little one is waiting for you.”
She believed as long as she had Liam, Dylan would never be able to leave her.
The day of the divorce, Beatrice Ashford, Dylan’s mother, had moved her and Liam into the main Ashford residence.
The Lambert family had also received several lucrative contracts from Beatrice because of Eliana.
Dylan gave her a brief hug, a low laugh in his voice. “Eliana, you go ahead. I have something to attend to. I’ll be back later. I’ll be very busy for a while. I want to build a secure future for you and our child.”
Hearing this, Eliana relaxed, her fair face radiating gentleness. She tilted her head up and planted a kiss on his cheek. ‘Good. He doesn’t suspect me!
