Spencer didn’t spare Dylan a glance, striding right past him and heading straight to the hospital bed. He asked anxiously. “Serena, how are you feeling now? Did your fever break?”
Serena smiled and shook her head. “It broke last night. I’m still a bit weak, so I slept through the whole night. But I’m fine now. I can go home soon.”
Her voice was gentle and cheerful, nothing like the cold way she spoke to Dylan.
Dylan could hear the difference. He stared at Serena, her smile bright and angelic. In that instant, his shoulders slumped, his whole body went rigid, and his stomach twisted with pain. He couldn’t stop himself from trembling.
He did this to himself. No matter how much he regretted it now, it was already too late.
He couldn’t wrap his head around it. Dylan wondered, ‘Didn’t Serena already have someone she loved?
‘Could it really be Spencer?‘
“Dylan, you’re here, too,” Spencer said, turning to look at him.
Dylan froze. Dylan thought, ‘Guess I’ve been invisible this whole time.
‘What is wrong with his eyes?‘
“Yeah, I’m leaving,” Dylan said, his voice hoarse and trembling.
He instinctively avoided Serena’s gaze, unable to look at her.
Spencer turned to Serena and said softly, “Serena, Liam, I’ll be right back.”
Liam adored Spencer. He beamed and said, “Spencer, you have to come back soon and stay with Mommy and me, okay?”
When Dylan heard his son’s words, it felt like a sledgehammer to the chest. Liam had never spoken to him with that kind of longing before.
But this was all on him. Even his own son’s suffering had gone unnoticed. A heavy ache welled up in his heart.
He strode out, and Spencer followed him. At the elevator, Spencer finally spoke. “Dylan, I heard something happened to your dad. Have you found him yet?”
Dylan shook his head, his mood sinking even lower, his features looking even sharper in the harsh light of his gloom. “Not
yet.”
Dylan hesitated, then looked at Spencer. “Spencer, we’re brothers for life. You’ll treat Liam well, right?”
Right now, the only ones he still worried about were Stella and the kids.
Spencer gave a wry smile. “If I ever get to marry Serena, I’ll love everything that comes with her. Everyone she cares about
Dylan was stunned. ‘Is that what love really is?‘ he wondered.
He just stared at Spencer, completely at a loss for words.
Spencer knew Dylan had never really understood what love was. Beatrice raised him to be the backbone of the family. His whole life was just work and endless exams. Outside of that, it was like nothing else ever mattered to him.
Spencer said earnestly, “Dylan, don’t just see people with your eyes. Try to see them with your heart. You’ll never truly

With that, Spencer headed back to the hospital room.

Dylan stood rooted to the spot, Spencer’s words echoing in his mind. For a long moment, he just couldn’t wrap his head around what Spencer had said.
“Mr. Ashford.” Miles popped up behind him.
Dylan turned around, looking a bit out of it. “Alright, let’s head to the office.”
Miles looked at Dylan’s pale face and thought, ‘If he keeps running himself into the ground like this, his body’s going to give out sooner or later.‘
“Mr. Ashford, you need to take your meds this morning. I got you some oatmeal. It’s especially tasty this season. Have a few bites first, then take your medicine, and we’ll head to the hospital,” Miles said.
