She said casually, “Eliana only does what benefits her. That’s when she’ll show her true colors and slip up. If we want her behind bars for life, all we have to do is wait for her to take the bait.”

Serena never pretended to be a good person; she was dead set on avenging her son.

Chris instantly understood what she meant.

Eliana was in custody now, but she wouldn’t be locked up for long. Someone as vicious as her deserved nothing less than a firing squad.

Serena looked at Chris and said, “Keep someone on Zoe. And tell Lyra to speed things up. Find Tyler and his daughter before anyone else does. If I’m right, something’s already happened to Tyler.”

She continued, “Eliana’s baby caught an infection. She was too scared to bring the kid home, so she had Beatrice handle it on the sly.”

Serena asked, “So, what do you think Beatrice would do to keep Tyler from ever finding out?*

Chris shot her a sly look with his striking eyes.

He got it. “Ms. Hale, the only way to keep a secret is to make sure the person who knows it is dead. Something’s definitely happened to Tyler.”

Serena took a deep breath, staring out at the sunlight. “Eliana’s the kind who’ll do whatever it takes to get her way. She’ll tear the Lennox family apart if that’s what it takes to get their fortune.”

Chris frowned, his eyes turning icy. “Man, Eliana’s just pure evil, huh?”

Serena lowered her gaze and let out a soft sigh. She hated all this backstabbing and deception. But in this world, she had to fight to survive.

It was Eliana who brought out the absolute worst in Beatrice, making her a monster.

And through it all, Serena had grown just as ruthless, just as merciless. She was no better than the rest.

Serena gave a bitter smile. “Chris, go check it out.”

Chris could see the heaviness in her heart; this kind of cutthroat life just wasn’t her thing.

“Ms. Hale, once this is all behind us, it’s really over. You and Liam can finally have the peaceful, happy life you deserve.” he said gently.

Serena looked at him, her smile brighter than ever. “Chris, we grew up together. You know I never wanted this life of fighting: and scheming, and that’s why I snuck away.

“But after all those years out there, my own ignorance and naivety left me with scars I’ll never forget.”

She went on, “But if you never go out and see the world, some things will always stay a mystery. We bury ourselves in books, but if we never actually use what we’ve learned out there, it’s pointless.”

Serena said, “What I’ve really learned these past few years is that good, honest folks always get hurt, people who can’t let keep suffering, and those who can’t see past things just keep struggling.”
