From Divorced Wife To The Top Heiress novel Chapter 3

Serena’s heart lurched. “That voice is Eliana’s. She wants me dead? A plan? What plan?

She and Eliana had barely crossed paths over the years.

Serena knew exactly what kind of woman Eliana was: the type who had abandoned Dylan when he was crippled and penniless, running off abroad with another man. Dylan was just too blind and stubborn to see it.

“Just make sure it’s done cleanly. Don’t let her catch on. Yes, I’m hanging up now.” Eliana’s hushed voice held a chilling finality before the line went dead.

Footsteps echoed briefly, then faded as she presumably descended the fire escape.

Serena stared at her own phone, still buzzing in her hand. She turned and walked to a more secluded spot to answer.

The one on the phone said, “Ms. Hale, the matter with Mr. Wood has been investigated.”

“Good. Bring the findings to me tonight,” Serena replied calmly and ended the call.

As she turned to leave, Dylan’s figure emerged from the dimly lit corridor ahead.

The lighting was low, but his tall, commanding silhouette was unmistakable, as was that flawlessly handsome face with its perpetually mocking edge–a face that had once perfectly matched every ideal she’d ever had.

Serena had nothing to say to him. She straightened her spine and moved to walk past him in the opposite direction.

As they brushed past each other, his hand shot out, his fingers wrapping around her wrist.

His gaze, filled with its usual provocative amusement, swept over her face.

She was stunning, breathtakingly so. But she seemed different. Colder. More radiant, yet utterly untouchable.

Her style had changed too. It was now sharp, fashionable, a world away from the conservative, subdued clothes she used to wear.

Now, she looked like a queen who had just stepped off the cover of a high–fashion magazine.

“Stella,” Dylan heard himself ask, the question slipping out almost against his will. “Was that the man? The one you’ve been in love with all this time?”

His eyes dropped to her soft, full lips, a sudden, unwanted memory of their taste flooding back.

He’d only kissed her once. It had been dangerously addictive.

Serena met his teasing look. This man was always the picture of indolent arrogance, a puzzle she could never solve.

“What if he is? What if he isn’t?” she countered, her voice icy. “We’re divorced. My life is no longer your concern.”

She tried to pull her hand away, but his grip tightened.

“Grandpa found out about the divorce,” Dylan stated, the playful edge vanishing, replaced by something sharper. “It triggered a heart attack.

“He’s in the hospital. He hasn’t had an episode in three years.

“This time, he was genuinely enraged. You need to come with me.”

He hadn’t expected the old man to find out so quickly.

Serena’s thoughts flew to Jacob. He and his wife, Sophia Ashford, had been the only ones in the Ashford family who had treated Serena with genuine kindness over the past three years.

Dylan’s parents, his sister, and his brother had all despised her, finding endless ways to humiliate her.

“Dylan,” Serena said, her voice dangerously quiet. “The moment you divorced me, I told you I would take back every ounce of care I ever gave you.

“Grandpa and Grandma will have to accept this reality eventually. I will not go to the hospital with you.

“If we’re cutting ties, let’s make it a clean break.”

Serena was furious. ‘How dare he come to me like this?

When he was at death’s door, it was me who had given part of my liver to save him. I secretly treated his legs. I worked from the shadows to rebuild the Ashford fortune.

‘And he? He reaped the rewards, only to discard me the moment his precious Eliana returned.

‘Even the deepest love would wither under such callousness.

‘And now, Eliana wants me dead!’

Dylan dropped all pretense of amusement, his tone turning threatening. “Stella, are you truly so heartless that you’d turn your back on them now?”

row furrowed. ‘Is she refusing to go with me?‘

Chapter 3 1

The moment Serena entered, his expression softened into one of deep affection. “Stella, my dear. You came.”

“Grandpa,” Serena said, sitting gently on the edge of the bed. Her heart twisted with complex emotions as she looked at the kind old man. “What happened? How did you take ill so suddenly?”
