Chapter 4
Dylan frowned. Hearing Serena say they shouldn’t meet again sent a wave of intensifying restlessness through him.
Just then, Eliana appeared at the end of the corridor, holding their son, Liam.
She hesitated, not daring to enter the room. Even with an Ashford heir in her arms, Jacob had refused to acknowledge her.
“Stella,” Eliana called out, her voice sweet and gentle, though a sliver of something cold flickered in her eyes. “You came to see Dylan’s grandpa?”
Serena’s attention, however, was drawn to the child in Eliana’s arms. A strange, sharp ache pierced her heart at the sight, followed by an overwhelming urge to hold him.
Noticing her gaze, Eliana subtly shifted Liam, shielding him closer to her body.
Serena snapped back to herself, lowering her head as she moved to pass by.
Watching Serena from behind, a venomous glint flashed in Eliana’s eyes. Just as Serena was about to walk past, Eliana suddenly let out a sharp gasp and threw herself backward, clutching Liam.
Acting on pure instinct, Serena lunged forward, her sole focus on catching the falling child.
Dylan, who had been about to enter Jacob’s room, spun around at the sound of Eliana’s cry and Liam’s startled wail.
He saw Eliana sprawled on the floor, and Serena on the floor beside her, cradling the little boy protectively in her arms.
Eliana’s heart sank for a split second. Then, the tears came. “Stella,” she sobbed, her voice trembling with feigned hurt. “I know Dylan and I wronged you. But Liam is innocent! Why would you push us?”
Dylan stormed over, fury darkening his features. “Stella, haven’t you caused enough trouble? We’re divorced. I gave you everything we agreed on. Why must you torment Eliana now?”
Serena seemed to not hear him. She was wholly focused on the little boy in her arms, holding him with exquisite care. Holding him felt like filling a hollow space inside her she’d thought was permanent.
Liam, frightened at first, quickly quieted in Serena’s embrace, nuzzling trustingly into her chest. “Mom…”
The word, soft and unsure, hit Serena like a physical blow. Thoughts of the son she had lost crashed over her. That single, fragile “Mom” was earth–shattering.
Eliana was stunned. ‘He called her Mom?‘
She scrambled over, her movements frantic, and snatched the child back. Serena, fearing the boy might get hurt in a tug–of- war, released him immediately.

Assured Liam was fine, Dylan turned his simmering anger back on Serena. “Stella, if you’re angry, take it out on me. Leave Eliana out of this.”
Dylan’s icy voice finally broke through her reverie. Serena’s gaze shifted from Liam to Eliana, her own eyes turning frosty.
“Eliana,” she said, her voice low and dangerous. “You would use your own child to frame me? Do you even deserve to be called a mother?”
