Beatrice froze for a second, then quickly asked, “Dylan, what are you doing here? I mean, what brings you back?”
She put on her loving mother facade.
Dylan let out a cold laugh. The deeper he dug, the scarier his mother seemed.
She didn’t even let a four–year–old off the hook, and still managed to keep her hands spotless. Even the police never suspected a thing.
He really had underestimated his own mother.
His lips curled into a mocking, disdainful smile. He said, “I heard you kidnapped a child today, and now the whole Kingsbridge police force is out hunting for you.
“Tell me, just how far would you go for Eliana, really?
“You took that kid just to threaten Stella’s director, all so the Lennox family wouldn’t find out about the child you and Eliana abandoned.
“I know how obsessed you are with the Ashford family’s reputation. You used to say Stella was just an orphan and not worthy of me, but now this woman, with such a messy past, suddenly?
“So, I came here today to ask you, why is that?”
Eliana’s face went pale. She kept her eyes down, too scared to say a word, afraid Dylan would catch on to anything.
Beatrice’s heart was pounding so hard it felt like it might leap out of her throat.
Dylan knew everything she’d done.
“Dylan, did you have someone watching me?” she asked, her voice shaking with fear. If those people found out Eliana called her “Mom,” everything would fall apart. She’d lose all ties to the Ashford family.
Dylan wouldn’t give a damn about her anymore, not even the smallest thing.
She’d lose all that luxury and status in a heartbeat.
“It’s nothing, Dylan. Eliana’s a kid I’ve watched grow up. She’s practically my daughter, What’s wrong with me helping her?” Beatrice said, her voice suddenly growing firm.
Beatrice squared her shoulders, her attitude turning fierce,
Dylan used to be terrified of her when she got angry.
“You’re not the one at fault. The real mistake was mine. I was blind, didn’t see your true colors, and ended up hurting the person who mattered most to me,” Dylan said, his eyes full of sorrow.
Thinking about the pain Stella went through, Dylan wondered, ‘Is this what it feels like to be betrayed? That kind of soul- crushing despair?‘
‘She must’ve hurt a hundred, a thousand times worse than I did, he thought.
Beatrice raised her hand to hit him, but Dylan caught her wrist mid–air, stopping her cold.

Dylan yanked his hand free, his voice colder than ice. “Mom, if you’re still keeping secrets from me, you’d better spill everything now. If I find out you’re plotting something again, you’re no longer my mother to me.”
Beatrice’s eyes widened, a jolt of panic flashing through them. ‘Me, scheming? What for? All I ever wanted was to claim everything the Ashford family has for myself,’ she thought bitterly.
‘If I’m going down, then the Ashford family’s coming with me. They owe me for all the years I’ve wasted on them,‘ she told herself, her heart heavy.
She let out a cold, mocking laugh, her gaze full of disappointment as she looked at him. She said, “What kind of plot could a mother like me possibly have?
“Abandoned by my own son, left behind by my husband. Eliana’s just here because she feels bad for me. That’s all. What wild ideas are you cooking up now?”
Dylan glared at her, fury boiling in his eyes. Even now, she was still putting on an act.
He shut his eyes, shoving down the ache in his chest. ‘She’s been secretly transferring Dad’s money. She really wants to snatch up everything the Ashford family has, he thought bitterly.
“You want the whole Ashford family? Not if I have anything to say about it,” Dylan said, his voice cold as ice.
Beatrice froze at Dylan’s words, a chill running down her spine.
‘So, he really knows,‘ she thought, her heart sinking.
‘Figures, he’s just an ungrateful wretch, no matter how much I gave him,‘ she seethed to herself.
Beatrice was done with Dylan for good. Her gaze hardened, full of venom. “Dylan, your father’s gone. I’m just looking into what he left behind. Why do you make me out to be some monster, like I’m scheming to take everything the Ashford family owns?”
She wasn’t going to play the loving mother anymore.
Dylan only had half a year left to live.
Beatrice’s voice shook with grief as she pressed him, “And you’ve got less than six months left, am I really wrong for doing this, as your mom?”
