Dylan’s face darkened. “What is it, Miles?”

Miles glanced at Eliana, thinking it was better she heard this too. “It’s about the land Mr. Lambert bought. He was conned. The plot is a protected historical site–an ancient burial ground. Development is prohibited.
“Worst–case scenario, the government seizes it. If that happens, the loss will be catastrophic. The company’s cash flow will dry up within a month.”
He continued, “When he bought it, the seller was desperate to offload it. They pulled some strings with the bank to push the loan through and dumped the property on him.”
And now, it was Dylan’s problem.
Miles couldn’t help but think his boss had the worst luck.
Everything was going south because of Eliana and her family. She was a two–faced phony, and she wasn’t worth any of this.
“Mr. Ashford, our current profits can’t even touch the loan payments. If we can’t sell this land and the bar goes under, Ashford Group will be bankrupt in a month.”
The color drained from Eliana’s face.
Dylan’s brow furrowed, a dull ache starting in his stomach as the weight of the news settled in.
‘How could it all go so wrong?‘ Dylan wondered.
A murderous look flashed in Eliana’s eyes. She wanted to kill her father. All that money, gone just like that.
Miles continued in a low, frustrated voice, “If this keeps up, the company will be back where it was three years ago. Your uncle, Rowan, was at the office first thing this morning with his cronies, demanding an explanation.
“And the Ellingtons made it official. They’re not partnering with us. They’ve signed with Spencer Grant and Cloudmere Group.”
Miles kept the next part to himself. If Stella were still here, the Ellington deal would have been theirs.
Rowan had never given up on his power grab, and now that Dylan had burned through billions for Eliana’s family, the board and the shareholders were losing faith.
This was the price of being blinded by love.
And with Dylan’s relationship with his ex–wife at an all–time low, Miles was genuinely worried for his boss.
Dylan’s handsome face was a grim mask. He said nothing.
“Dylan, I’ve already disowned my family,” Eliana said, rushing to distance herself from the mess.

“From now on, you don’t have to worry about them. You don’t have to help them on my account anymore.”
Dylan’s expression was stern, his brow slightly furrowed as he looked at her.
“Disowned them? When did this happen?”
“Yesterday. Your mother took me, and I signed the papers,” Eliana said quickly.
The Ashford family, bankrupt? How could this be happening again?
It was all Jasper’s fault.
The company had just stabilized. What were they going to do?
Dylan could fix this, right? He had to.
A shiver went through Dylan. He knew what kind of man Jasper Lambert was, so cutting ties was for the best. Still, something about this felt… off.
Why did her words never match her actions?
“Eliana,” he began, his voice low, “I remember you wrote to me once that a person can live with honesty and grace because they have sunshine in their heart. You said you always loved the people around you.”
So why did he always feel a chilling darkness from her?
