Serena descended the stairs, her steps quick yet graceful. She led Chris into the dining room for breakfast.
“Eat first,” she said, her voice melodic as she gestured to the spread on the table. “We can talk after.”
Chris’s face lit up when he saw the tomahawk steak, a personal favorite.
He sat down with a flourish and watched Serena start to eat before eagerly picking up his own knife and fork.
Breakfast at Cloudmere Estate was always lavish, and it had become even more so since Serena’s return.
Her usual breakfast consisted of five delicate crepes and a small steak, accompanied by fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables.
After they finished, they moved to the living room.
Sipping her freshly brewed coffee, Stella savored the quiet comfort of her new life.
Life after Dylan was peaceful. No more waking up at the crack of dawn to make his breakfast or prepare special health–promoting cuisine, and best of all, no more enduring Beatrice’s constant, cutting remarks.
Serena set down her porcelain teacup. “So, what’s the news?”
Chris was practically buzzing with excitement. That scumbag Dylan was finally going to get what was coming
to him.
He was so thrilled when he found out that he had driven over personally just to see the look on her face.
“Ms. Hale, that plot of land Dylan bought from the Lamberts–turns out there’s an ancient tomb underneath it. It’s a protected site, so no development is allowed. A lot of people must have gotten wind of it, which is why no one else bid.”
Serena’s brow furrowed. She knew the Ashford family’s financial situation all too well. If this was true, it would set Dylan back to where he was three years ago, though perhaps in a slightly better position.
His uncle, Rowan, and his family wouldn’t miss the chance to pounce.
On top of that, Dylan’s health would likely start to deteriorate again.
A complicated feeling washed over Serena. Was the man she had once cherished with all her heart really going to end up back at square one?
Chris watched her expression closely.
‘Oh, no,‘ he thought. ‘She can’t possibly be feeling sorry for that jerk, can she?‘
Serena looked up at him.
Chris immediately straightened his expression and waited.

“Ms. Hale, your orders?” he asked respectfully.

But Serena had no time to worry about Dylan. Before his empire crumbled, she needed to find out the truth about her child.
“Find the man who was with Eliana all those years ago,” she ordered. “Do whatever it takes.”
Chris blinked, momentarily caught off guard, then felt a wave of relief. Finally, Ms. Hale was done with Dylan.
Meanwhile, at the Ashford mansion, Dylan was having breakfast with Eliana and Liam.
Dylan watched his quiet son, a rare, satisfied smile gracing his lips.
He hadn’t been home in a few days, and his mood had been foul. Seeing Liam this morning had taken the edge off.
Eliana smiled, trying to create a picture–perfect family moment. “Liam, Daddy came back just to have breakfast with you. Are you happy?”
Liam paused mid–bite, glanced at his father, and said, “He came back to see you.”
After that, he just kept his head down and continued eating.
He remembered watching a video that said kids who say sweet things are more likable, so he forced himself to say what he knew she wanted to hear.
He had to eat well and stay healthy. If he got sick, Eliana would only scold him.
Just as he predicted, Eliana beamed. The kid was finally saying something useful.
Liam saw her smile and went back to his food.
Dylan turned to Eliana, his tone softening. “Eliana, the design competition is in a few days. I’ve already registered you. If you can win first place in Kingsbridge, it’ll be a huge launch for your career once I acquire that company for you.”
Eliana had always dreamed of having her own fashion label, an exclusive high–end brand sold online.
“Of course, Dylan. Thank you,” she said happily. “I’ll do my best.”
She could be an asset to him, a capable partner, just like Stella had been.
Just then, Miles burst in. He saw the family at the table and hesitated, not wanting to interrupt, but the urgency of his news won out. “Mr. Ashford, we have a problem. A big one.”
