Frederick's eyes were inscrutable, but his voice was uncharacteristically gentle. "Go to the station for now. I'll have Saul head over immediately."
"What about Sierra?"
"I'll find Sierra and get to the bottom of this."
Lydia nodded.
She had his reassurance, yet a knot of unease remained tight in her stomach.
Whenever it came down to her and Sierra, he always sided with Sierra.
But Frederick needed her right now; he couldn't afford to throw her to the wolves.
Plus, Charles was pulling the strings in the background.
She hadn't done it, and the police would figure that out eventually.
Gable, however, was frantic. "Mrs. Foster, how can you go to a place like that?"
"It'll be fine."
"Let me come with you."
"Don't worry."
Gable had always treated her well, and Lydia deeply appreciated it.
Her heart warmed at the housekeeper's loyalty.
Lydia asked the officers to wait outside while she changed out of her loungewear and into a smart suit.
Still fretting, Gable draped a trench coat over her shoulders.
The precinct was even more chaotic at night than during the day.
Vice and crime were on full display; a drunken brawl was child's play here.
The officers escorted Lydia into an interrogation room.
As the heavy metal door swung open, she blinked in shock. Sitting across the table, his handsome face clouded with dark irritation, was Xavier.
"Have a seat, Mrs. Foster," the detective said.
He pointed to the empty chair next to Xavier.
She walked over and sat down, glancing at Xavier, but he refused to even look at her.
"What is the relationship between the two of you?"
Startled by the detective's question, confusion flashed in her eyes. "Excuse me, but what does Mr. Ford have to do with my case?"
The detective pulled a black card from an evidence bag and tossed it onto the table in front of her.
"You tell me what Mr. Ford has to do with your bribery charges."
"This is the black card you handed over to the victim in Mr. Foster's case. It's loaded with millions of dollars."
Lydia whipped her head toward Xavier in horror, meeting his deeply annoyed stare.
Of course he was pissed. He had been dragged into a police station in the middle of the night.
